Pranav Mohan is Placed on 2018 Letzeiser Honor List

AME Senior Pranav Mohan was placed on the 2018 Letzeiser Honor List on April 6, 2019. Mohan is a member of the Systems Realization Laboratory at OU and is mentored by Dr. Allen and Dr. Farrokh. The Letzeiser Awards are made each year by a student, faculty, staff committee based on leadership, scholarship and service to the university.

AME Students Win Awards at OU-OUHSC Biomedical Engineering Symposium

On March 29 at the 3rd Annual OU-OUHSC Biomedical Engineering Symposium, AME students participated in the student poster competition. The event was held at the Samis Education Center at the OU Health Sciences Center.

Devin Laurence was awarded first place, while Paige Welch and Samuel Jett were awarded second and third place respectively. The top ten finalists were Yuxuan Chen, Jaanam Gopalakrishnan, Katherine Haddad, Samuel Jett, Devin Laurence, Samara Lewis, Guofa Shou. Julia Tang, Paige Welch, and Omar Michael Wyman.

The Symposium is aimed to bring together the biomedical science and engineering community from the Norman campus and the clinicians and scientists from the Health Sciences Center campus in unprecedented fashion. The symposium will engage clinicians, entrepreneurs, basic scientists, engineers, and key players from the bioscience industry, all aligned in the collective vision of building new partnerships and spreading awareness. The leadership of the symposium includes members of both campuses, including clinical input to ensure a welcoming and enabling environment for clinicians to attend.

Congratulations student poster competition winners!

Boomer Rocket Team Receives 3rd Place at Competition

Boomer Rocket Team received 3rd place at the Argonia cup competition. The event took place in Argonia, Kansas from March 30-31, 2019.

The competition objective was to launch a rocket-powered vehicle in excess of 8,000’ AGL. The rocket had to contain a golf ball payload, and the team had to recover the payload safely at a predetermined location on the rocket range.

ASME Receives Awards at National Conference

ASME OU received multiple awards at E-Fest West, ASME’s national conference. The conference took place in Pomona, California on March 15-17, 2019.

The ASME OU Officer Team won 1st place in the Altair Design Optimization competition. Treasurer Matt Muhlinghause won 1st place in the Old Oral Guard competition and the technical award for the Old Guard Oral competition.

ASME’s Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) are regional events for engineering students that include design competitions, career development workshops, access to thought leaders and innovators in various engineering fields, and networking opportunities. They host many competitions, leadership opportunities, and social activities for students to meet engineers from other colleges.

Aerospace Engineering Student Featured in OU Crimson Spotlight

Sarah Ciccaglione, an aerospace engineering student, was featured in the “Crimson Spotlight” segment of the Inside OU newsletter on March 13, 2019. In the video, she speaks about her involvement at OU and how the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering has made her feel at home.

Ciccaglione is a member of the Sooner Racing Team. She enjoys the mechanical systems behind the cars and competing with her team. Ciccaglione is interested in the technical side of aerospace engineering and she enjoys the math and science involved in her major. Furthering her career in the engineering field, she also got the opportunity to intern with Tesla in Palo Alto, California.

Ciccaglione is very involved on campus. She is a member of the rowing team and double majors in aerospace and vocal performance. Ciccaglione loves all of the opportunities that OU provides for its students and the support system she has gained.

Sooner Racing Team’s Thousands Strong Campaign Officially Launched

For the past seven months, Sooner Racing Team has been designing and manufacturing their car for this year’s Formula SAE competition. The team has a goal to raise $7,500 to get them on the road. The money will go towards transportation costs and supplies. The competition will provide professional experience for the team members, as they learn hands-on skills and have the opportunity to network with businesses in the automotive field, as well as, with students from 550 other universities around the world.

The Sooner Racing Team is an OU student organization that designs, builds, tests, and races an open-wheel, formula-style race car. The team wants to take their 2019 car to the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition in Lincoln, Nebraska, but they need your help getting there!

Gaylord student produces video of Dr. Chung-Hao Lee’s Research.

Gaylord student Victor Pozadas filmed and created a video on Dr. Chung-Hao Lee’s research. The video encompasses the work that Lee has been conducting with students in his lab. His research focuses on cardiovascular biomedical modeling and working with biological tissues and patient-specific modeling for improved diagnosis.

The goal of this current project is to take a patient specific geometry and put it into this model to figure out what treatment would work best for the patient. They are able to show how therapeutics effect the mechanics. The students said that it is really amazing to be able to work on a heart since mechanical engineers typically work with steel.

Giving Day 2018

For 24 hours on Tuesday the University of Oklahoma hosted Giving Day, a campus wide fundraiser to help our students and programs! Overall the University raised $477,764 through 2,123 gifts.

The engineering department raised $96,100 with 459 gifts and AME’s own ambassador, Rebeka Morales yielded the most gifts university wide. AME had an encouraging message from Dr. Saddique to get the donations started and a donation center in the Hitachi Conference room where students could donate between classes.

AME would like to thank everyone who donated to support our amazing student teams! They have big goals and with your support that are even closer to reaching them.

Thank you to our challenge from Michelle Coppedge who matched $1000 after we raised $1000 and another $1000 after we obtained 30 total gifts.

OU students chosen for peace grant to educate women in India on menstrual health

This summer, after being chosen for a $10,000 grant to promote peace, three OU students carried out their project proposal to provide menstrual health education in India.

Senior Pranav Mohan, senior Cindy Belardo and graduate student Abhishek Yadav won United World Colleges’ Davis Project for Peace Grant after forming a proposal to travel to India to educate women about menstrual health. This summer they put the proposal into action with Mohan travelling to villages and schools in Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and educating women about menstrual health in areas where it is a taboo subject.

“Menstruation is a topic of taboo and it’s also a topic of shame,” said Mohan. “We wanted to create that friendly environment where women can talk about it. Menstruation is such a thing that it creates a pressure, it creates a boundary around women where they are not able to open up, where they are bounded, so we wanted to break those cages and empower them.”

Yadav said that Mohan and Belardo were very passionate about the subject and his role was to help them do the research to find their main focus point, which was educating women about the menstrual cup.

The lack of education about menstrual health means that women aren’t aware of all their options and it can make menstruation a negative experience for women, said Mohan, a mechanical engineering major. Mohan said the team sees the menstrual cup as the best menstrual health option for many women.

Mohan said that there are a variety of reasons they suggest women use the menstrual cup, including that it lasts up to 12 hours, there’s less of a risk of toxic shock syndrome as there is in tampons, you can use the same cup for 8-10 years, it’s silicone so it molds to your body comfortably and it’s environmentally friendly and cheap.

Belardo, an environmental studies pre-medicine major, was involved the preparation and organization of the project. After the group conducted research, the information they gathered was used to create manuals which they gave to volunteers from the NGO they worked with, Belardo said. They chose to use the volunteers to speak with the women because they felt that it would be easier to hear about menstrual health coming from Indian women they could relate to, she added.

“Basically we were kind of showing the pro’s and con’s of using cloth, that was like the primary use of most of the ladies there, so like what are the good things, bad things, and then also disposable pads,” Belardo said. “Then we also showed the pro’s and con’s of menstrual cups, so we looked at all of them and they could decide from there if they want to try it, so it’s in their hands.”

Mohan said there were about 12 seminars lead by the volunteers, each 2 hour long sessions, reaching around 300 women. Though 300 seems like a small number, he said the women are likely to talk about the menstrual cup with their friends and spread the idea by word-of-mouth.

Mohan said the students bought the menstrual cup in bulk and sold it at a cheaper price to the women, with 138 buying one. One of the volunteers is following up with the women who chose to try the menstrual cup to see if they are experiencing any problems and if they like it, Belardo said.

Other than promoting the menstrual cup, their main purpose was to educate, Belardo said.

“The whole premise of this project is to talk about menstruation and trying to break that taboo, which is here too, like even for me, my own life, I was not comfortable talking about that and especially also in India,” Belardo said. “So that’s our main goal, just to educate. A lot of women don’t even realize what is happening to their body, and to me, that’s a right just to know, it’s such a natural process, you shouldn’t be ashamed, you shouldn’t be embarrassed.”

Launching Rockets in Kansas with Dr. Hays

On August 5th 2018, Dr. Hays’ research group in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering launched two 12.5 ft.-tall, 60+-pound rockets carrying customer payloads in Argonia, Kansas.  Undergraduate aerospace engineering students Alex Speed, Trevor Trevino, Christopher Hughes, William Wadkins and Jarrod Manning successfully built and flew the two rocket systems with assistance from Dr. Hays.

 

Senior aerospace engineering student Alex Speed obtained the University’s first undergraduate Tripoli Rocket Association Level 3 certification as a result of his successful launch of “Godspeed.”  The second launch of “Spednik” brought OU Aerospace into the supersonic realm by reaching Mach 1.15.  Both rockets successfully delivered customer data from the payload, and were tracked directly to their landing site using Telemega GPS telemetry systems.
