Welcome to The Nontraditional Learner – the new and improved College of Liberal Studies blog!
The OU Web Comm office partnered with EduBlogs to bring a consistent blog look and well-supported platform to departments across the OU campus. Other than Web Comm’s blog, CLS is the first entity at OU to try it out!
If you previously subscribed to the blog on Blogger, you should be automatically redirected here, but you should go ahead and re-subscribe to this blog so you will continue to receive update alerts. You can also subscribe with Google Friend Connect, which is at the bottom of the righthand sidebar.
My blog updates have been a bit sparse lately, mainly because I traveled to Chicago, Las Vegas and San Diego within a 10-day time frame.
One of the great things about taking OU’s CLS programs on the road is that I am fortunate to represent OU in some amazing cities and venues. We started the morning of Oct. 23 at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) annual conference in Chicago (yes, that was the week after our loss to Texas Tech which we never heard the end of), and flew directly from there to Vegas. As I have mentioned in the past, OU CLS/Outreach has partnered with the Las Vegas Metro PD to bring educational programs to police, corrections and civilians to Vegas via our presence on Nellis AFB. We hit each area-command at a pre-shift briefing to make a small presentation about our online or Nellis-based programs, and then we evaluated their collegiate transcripts for admission to OU on the spot!
After a weekend at home, I then traveled with our Associate Dean Dr. Martha Banz to our San Diego office in search of a new OU-San Diego representative. The results of that search are coming soon, stay tuned…

Hello, I was so happy to find your blog about non-traditional students! I have returned to OU as an advertising major and I am loving it except for the fact I don’t know a single person here! I would love it if there was some type of student organization for non-traditional students because I know there has to be others out there in my situation! Please let me know if there is any kind of group or opportunity to meet other like minded (and aged) people:)
Sincerely,
Angela Harich
Hi Angela!
First of all, welcome back to OU! Unfortunately, I do not know of a nontraditional student organization here on campus. Here at the College of Liberal Studies, most of our classes are offered online, so we literally have students spread out all over the world. We do, however, have a large local population, so I think the formation of a group like you’re looking for would be well-received. Here is some information about registering a student organization.
Because our students and alumni are so spread out, we’ve found that our Facebook page, Twitter and this blog have become virtual communities for these people to connect and feel involved.
Since you’re an advertising major, you might ask your professors and advisers about student groups or activities they recommend. The Lindsey+Asp student-run agency would be an excellent way for you to get involved and meet new people.
I hope you keep reading our blog, which is geared toward nontraditional learners like yourself. Let us know if you have any other questions or comments!
