2015 Student Awards Night

On Thursday, April 16, MPGE hosted its annual Student Awards Night at OU’s Lloyd Noble Center Chesapeake Energy Courtside Club. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni came together to celebrate the achievements of our students during the 2014-15 school year. Zeeneb Alsaihati was recognized as this year’s Outstanding Junior and Kreg Flowers as Oustanding Senior. Both students have proven themselves academically and in leadership positions that have benefited not only themselves but their peers, as well. Two students were given the honor of being named Tool Pusher. Aarron Large and Gavin Edington have done a remarkable job since their freshman year leading twelve intramural SPE teams, including a second place championship in volleyball and numerous playoffs for basketball and football. Aaron and Gavin solidified the reputation of SPE as a true threat in the intramural world, and have dedicated several hours each week towards the cause.

This year, 35 graduate students published or presented papers in several journals including Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering, Journal of Petroleum Technology, Society of Petroleum Engineers Journal, and Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering and at conferences in places such as Sicily, Amsterdam, Houston, San Diego, Madrid, Kuala Lampur, Budapest, Salt Lake City, and Oklahoma City. Son Dang was chosen as this year’s Outstanding M.S. Student for continually striving for academic excellence and performing above and beyond his peers. The Outstanding Ph.D. Student Award went to Ali Ousseini Tinni for his high level academic performance and creative contributions beyond the normal requirements of his degree.

Dr. Faruk Civan was chosen by the students to receive the 2015 Outstanding Faculty Award. Dr. Civan has been dedicated to teaching and student success at OU for over thirty years.

Rounding out the night, key note speaker and MPGE alumnus, Ronnie Irani spoke about his experiences in the industry and what made him successful.

This night couldn’t have been pulled off without the hard work of MPGE’s staff and the sponsorship given by Shell, Chesapeake Energy, and Chevron.
