A Report from the U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium

The American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA) held their 50th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium in Houston, Texas, June 26-29. This was a special year for OU faculty and students in attendance because MPGE Professor Emeritus Jean-Claude Roegiers not only served as a keynote speaker but was recognized with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the field of geomechanics. Roegiers spent over twenty years teaching and conducting research at OU.

Attending the symposium was MPGE Professor Ahmad Ghassemi and his team of geomechanics students, who were there to present their research. A total of 14 papers that were authored or co-authored by Ghassemi and his students were presented during the technical sessions. In addition, Ghassemi organized the first ARMA Technical Committee on Hydraulic Fracturing workshop, and co-chaired two conference sessions. OU was further recognized for its involvement in making the symposium a success through the work of student volunteers Qinglu Cheng, Rohit Bakshi, Elahe Khosravi and Amirhossein Kamali.
