The following post was written by OU SPE Secretary, Kate Oransky. OU SPE hosted their 3rd Annual Oktoberfest raising money for Relay for Life. This year they partnered with E-Club and collected money for the Oklahoma Science and Research Fair Fund.
On Friday, October 20, OU SPE co-hosted our annual Oktoberfest fundraising event with Engineer’s Club. This event was designed to raise money for Relay for Life and the Oklahoma Science Research Fair Fund. We had raffle drawings throughout the night, a cornhole tournament, trivia, and Pie-the-Professor. Through these events, we raised over $2,000 for great causes.
By far the most successful event was Pie-the-Professor, where for the two weeks prior to the event, students, faculty, staff, and alumni could donate to pie a professor. Each nominated professor had a donation goal that had to be met before they would get pied. These goals ranged from $50 to $500. Attendees could also donate at the event, and almost every nominated professor got pied – including Dean Stice! Throughout the night SPE officers and cabinet members also were pied thanks to more donations, and our supportive staff even took a few (or five) pies to help us raise money!
We had raffle prizes donated from many local businesses including O’Connells, Louie’s, Fuzzy’s and Chix-N-Sticks. We also had teams enter in the night’s trivia competition, which featured engineering trivia organized by SPE’s Petrobowl chairs. Later in the evening the Cornhole tournament began, where teams of two could compete to win prizes. We also had an SPE student DJ and another volunteer as the night’s MC to keep the energy going throughout the event.
In order to pull off this massive undertaking, SPE’s Social Chairs, Welbon Miller, Vincent Giambaresi, and Sam Rogers, started planning for this months in advance, and we are so thankful for all their hard work! OU SPE also recruited help from over 40 E-Club and SPE students to run the different activities at
the event, and we couldn’t have done this without their help. OU SPE would also like to thank the faculty and staff that helped with planning and those who volunteered to get pied. Without their support we would not have been able to raise as much money as we did. Overall, Oktoberfest 2017 was a huge success for SPE and E-Club, and we are proud to support Relay for Life and the Oklahoma Science and Research Fair Fund.
