I have written “BLOG” on my to-do list every week since the start of my sophomore year, and this is my first post. That should be an indication of how my year is going thus far. Let me quickly catch you up on what’s been going on in my life…

I had way too much fun over summer, but still managed to land an internship with the product development department of my dad’s company. I continue to put in as many hours as possible while at school for a little extra income. More importantly, I’m making great connections that will surely help me in the future.

It’s 4:15 a.m., and I’m on the 12th floor study lounge of Muldrow Tower. I have eight items on my to do list for the night, and this blog entry is number six. My roommate is on my left, studying for Spanish and playing fratmusic.com playlists to keep us awake. My suitemate is on my right, catching up on homework. Why aren’t we sleeping? Because there are three weeks of our freshman year at college remaining, and we don’t want to waste a moment. I’ll sleep when I die.

Luckily it started just as my last class ended, but yesterday I suddenly started having the worst abdominal pains of my life. I was desperate enough to make it stop that I called my parents who happened to be on vacation in Orlando. My overprotective mother called the only person she knew in Norman to pick me up and take me to the urgent care center. After waiting around in pain for a few hours, they referred me to the emergency room.

The docs were worried it could be appendicitis or an infection, but fortunately it was nothing serious. (Not that my pain wasn’t serious!) The most incredible part of the whole situation was how much support I got from my friends and family from here and afar. Mom was of course calling me for updates, promising to catch the first flight out in the morning if I did need surgery. My sister in Dallas said she would drive up to stay with me if I were admitted overnight. All three of my roommates and a few other friends came to the hospital to check on me and drive me from place to place. One of my friends’ mom was offering her expertise over the phone. Professors were more than understanding about me taking a couple days to recover. Everyone was on my side.

As I was telling my mom not to leave Orlando, she asked how I would feel if I needed surgery and my family wasn’t there. I told her I’d be fine. (I was a little loopy from the pain meds, though.) Either way, the whole situation made me realize how great I have it here.

Someone told me that your first Christmas break in college is the best, and they may be right. It was a funny feeling walking back into my bedroom at home to unpack. Everything was in the same spot, just dustier. I’m a bit of a pack rat. I can find sentimental value in hotel keys, ticket stubs, and even cool packaging (only an advertising major). As I unpacked though, I decided to sift through my collection and was able to let go of a lot. Now that I’m a college student, I’m more focused on the future than the past.

We’re all sitting in class waiting for our history professor to start the class. We’re sitting in pretty much the same seats we all sat in on day 1, making small talk with the people around us. I get my laptop out as I see the professor opening the day’s powerpoint presentation. Just another day of notes. She walks to the middle of the stage, though, to make a brief announcement that rocked my world.

My New Home

I swear I have the easiest schedule in the freshman class, and it allows me to spend my time observing my new home and the people in it. I know my roommate from my high school, and after four weeks we have yet to have a single conflict. My suite mates didn’t even know each other before college, but the four of us are like brothers already. Speaking of brothers…
