Every Spring, over 5,000 students disperse across the Norman-OKC metro to serve our community and make an immediate and widespread difference. This day of community service at OU is called the Big Event, and this year marked the 13th OU Big Event!

1. Fountain Hopping

  • Although it would be interesting to just visit all of the campus fountains, by fountain hopping, I mean literally hopping INTO the fountain, and several of them! OU has fountains by the dorms, next to the Union, behind the admin building (one was even built especially as a drinking fountain for canine visitors), and even on top of buildings. Everyone should visit each fountain at least once while they’re at OU and learn about what makes each one unique. (Example? My friends and I learned that the Class of ’35 fountain is heated.)

8 Things I Missed About OU Over Winter Break

8. The South Oval

When you come for your tour, the South Oval probably seems like nothing more than a huge space that takes forever to walk across, but in reality it’s the center of activity at OU. This is because, especially as a freshman, all of your courses will most likely be concentrated in this area of campus. Last semester, 3 out of my 4 classes were somewhere on the Oval. Even if you’re not a freshman, the Oval serves as a rendezvous point for every student at OU, no matter what major or year they might be. CAC and other campus organizations advertise their events here, free stuff is often distributed here, and everyone has to pass through at some point. What I’ve missed most is the liveliness of the Oval and how I always see my friends pass by when I’m walking to class. I miss the way people cross Lindsey before the monotone crosswalk voice says, “Walk sign is on” because they’re running late to class. And I miss the free stuff, but I’ll get my fill soon thanks to CAC’s Winter Welcome Week!

If I’m not in my dorm room, not at a meeting, or not in class, chances are you’ll find me in the student union. Specifically, you’ll find me nestled inside one of the many booths in the Clarke-Anderson Room, better known as the Schooner Room. I come here for study breaks in between classes, for lunch and dinner at the food court nearby, for late night cram sessions, and sometimes just to sit and relax. (Would anyone care to take a wild guess as to where I’m sitting while I write this blog?)

Hey guys! I got a little ahead of myself in the last blog and jumped straight into an excited account of my English class without even introducing myself. Anyone who read that probably thinks I’m a nerd now (hint: It’s okay, because you’re right.) My name is Parisa and I am a freshman here at this wonderful university. I like crafts, dancing, traveling, running, quality time with loved ones, baking cakes, making to-do lists, and reading, I’m currently a declared English major, but I’m about to change my major to International Studies with a focus in the Middle East, and I’ve even thought about minoring in Arabic. Or I might change it to Human Relations. (Edit: Actually, as of today, I think I’m going with Sociology.) Honestly, I have no idea what I want to be “when I grow up,” and your advisers at OU will assure you that indecisiveness is perfectly okay. Luckily, at OU there are over 150 majors to choose from, so I have quite the selection to go through until I find the ‘right one’! Read more

Three times a week at 9:30 in the morning, I walk across campus to Boyd Street for my Expository writing class. Expository writing is the alternative option to Composition II, and if you’ve opted out of Comp I (your default first English class) through AP tests or college credit, you’ll have the option to take an Expo class your first semester.
