It’s currently 3:33 in the morning and it is so sad that I think it is early. Here lately my life at OU has consisted of late night studying for finals… yes it’s crunch time! I have started to realize that, maybe it’s because I’m in my first semester, but I’m not really sure how to prepare at this point. I’ve been attending my classes, meeting my professors during office hours, and re-reading over my notes. Finals are difficult to describe. I feel prepared, yet I don’t! It’s an exciting feeling knowing the semester is almost over, yet frightening to think that my first college finals are here! I feel that the only thing getting me by at this point is knowing I get to go home in about a week, and start a fresh semester after that! I could not be more excited for next semester. I’ve learned so much this semester, both academically and about myself. This semester has been filled with wonderful things happening around campus… Have you heard about them?!  Read more

10. The Seed Sower

It may just seem like a statue at first, but it’s much more than that! It greets you when you walk onto the main part of campus, the South Oval, and is one of the most recognized features of the OU campus. Just so you know, it is a statue of OU’s first president, David Ross Boyd. But all you really need to know is that it’s sometimes decorated for game days or the beginning of school, and you will see it on many pamphlets and t-shirts once you get here. It really does symbolize OU!

9. Norman/Oklahoma City

Norman really is a great place to have a college campus! It’s nice because it’s not in the city, so it’s not too crowded or overwhelming; but on the other hand, it’s not in the middle of nowhere. Pretty much anything you want on a daily basis can be found in Norman; but if you really want to go to the city, Oklahoma City is only a quick trip away. It only takes about 20 or 30 minutes to get to Bricktown, which is probably the most popular part of Oklahoma City.

OU Cousins is one of my favorite organizations on campus! Every year, this group pairs international students with American students to give them the opportunity to get to know each other and their respective culture. Events are held throughout the year that are particularly representative of American culture to give international students a taste of traditions they might not otherwise get during their time in the states.

Hello there! I am Sydney Stavinoha, a freshman here at the wonderful campus of OU, majoring in broadcast journalism and minoring in aviation. First, I will tell you about myself…

I am from the “sweet” town of Sugar Land, Texas, where I attended Kempner High School. That’s right outside of Houston, TX if you weren’t sure! I loved living there, but I also love living in Norman!  I chose to come to OU because first off, I fell in LOVE with the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication! It is amazing, and another great perk is that it is completely  “TEAM MAC,” or in other words, it is all Apple-based products that you get to use while in the building! Another reason, probably the main reason, I came to OU is because I was selected for the President’s Leadership Class. What is the President’s Leadership Class, you ask?

…I will tell you!

Once you get to college, you are faced with dozens of decisions every day, especially the first week after move-in.  One of those decisions is whether to go through Formal Recruitment, also known as “rush.”  Rush is essentially the same for guys and girls: there’s a few days set out where you will tour all of the Greek houses on campus, shaking a lot of hands and meeting a lot people (which can be a bit overwhelming).  But by the end of rush, yet another decision arises — to pledge a fraternity or a sorority or not. Personally, I did go through rush, and I did pledge to a fraternity, and I have not regretted it once.  I went through rush because I wanted to meet new people.  I ended up pledging because I saw the positive aspects a fraternity has to offer: brotherhood, accountability, and friendship. So far, I have loved being in a fraternity.  I’m meeting great guys and getting plugged in to more campus activities.  Going Greek is not going to make or break your college experience, and it is not necessarily for everybody.  But once again, college is about making your decisions and deciding what is best for you.

Hey guys! I got a little ahead of myself in the last blog and jumped straight into an excited account of my English class without even introducing myself. Anyone who read that probably thinks I’m a nerd now (hint: It’s okay, because you’re right.) My name is Parisa and I am a freshman here at this wonderful university. I like crafts, dancing, traveling, running, quality time with loved ones, baking cakes, making to-do lists, and reading, I’m currently a declared English major, but I’m about to change my major to International Studies with a focus in the Middle East, and I’ve even thought about minoring in Arabic. Or I might change it to Human Relations. (Edit: Actually, as of today, I think I’m going with Sociology.) Honestly, I have no idea what I want to be “when I grow up,” and your advisers at OU will assure you that indecisiveness is perfectly okay. Luckily, at OU there are over 150 majors to choose from, so I have quite the selection to go through until I find the ‘right one’! Read more

When I was a freshman, I thought about rushing; all of the girls I knew already had tons of friends just from rushing and then pledging a sorority! I mean, what could be so bad about it? Great house, tons of new people, connections to great parties and, lets face it, those charming frat boys. But there was something that just didn’t push my desire far enough, so I didn’t rush the fall or spring semester. But this semester, something changed.

Transitioning into college has definitely been a tough thing. I can still remember my senior year in high school and stressing out over college, how my classes were going to be, and exactly what life would be like. Now that I am here, I am hoping I can share some ways to make transitioning into college a little easier for you. I will begin by telling you something you have probably heard many times before: college is all about managing time wisely. You have one hour of a class and a lot of free time that you may or may not know what to do with. Getting used to dorm life, classes, and dealing with free time can become overwhelming. Here are just a few things to keep in mind: Read more

Hello everyone! I should probably start by introducing myself. My name is Kara and I am a freshman here at OU. My major is Public Relations and my minors are General Business and Spanish. So far, my freshman year has been a series of ups and downs! I am from Overland Park, Kansas, which is a suburb of Kansas City. Coming to OU as an out-of-state student and not knowing anyone was a lot harder than I imagined. It has taught me a lot about my ability to foster new relationships though. Everyone at OU is very welcoming, from the nice lady scanning Sooner OneCards at the cafeteria to the boy sitting next to me during a lecture in Dale Hall. Even in lonely moments, I find that there is always someone feeling the same way that I do. If any of you are considering coming to OU from out-of-state, don’t hesitate! It will challenge you and inspire you, but it’s very worth it!

Well, it is officially my senior year. I am not sure if I have come to believe that to be true though. I am currently on my porch writing, doing homework, and listening to some of my favorite music in shorts and a sweatshirt, which is my all time favorite outfit. The weather has been absolutely beautiful this week so I have been staying outside as much as possible.

Not only do I get to wear my favorite outfit, but I have been drinking my favorite drink…pumpkin spice latte (for all you Starbucks lovers you know my excitement). But what is even more exciting than all of those things is the fact that it is 45 days until HOMECOMING.
