Counting this summer I have two left. Two summers full of swimming, reading, sleeping in, traveling, staying up all night, and wasting away in the Oklahoma heat with friends. These days will soon come to a close and I will need to find a full time job or go to grad school, but for now I will celebrate the time I have for adventures. This summer my days will be spent in Norman, and I wouldn’t want to spend them anywhere else.  Norman has become my home away from home.

The chaos and stress of the semester has faded away and summer session has begun. Norman in the summer is slower paced, but it’s amazing how many people stay in Norman or the OKC metro area for the summer and how many things there are to do. During the busy semester there isn’t much time to go to the city to explore locally owned restaurants like the Mule and Pie Junkie in the Plaza District and Cuppies and Joe on 23rd, peruse the artwork at the Paseo Arts Festival, or stroll alongside the Bricktown Riverwalk. OKC has so many cool neighborhoods to discover and I’m looking forward to doing just that!

The atmosphere in Norman becomes more relaxed and there is always something to do with friends on or off campus. Free movies play in Meacham Auditorium every weekend and volleyball and basketball leagues are organized through Student Life. The Summer Session team has planned so many events this summer that bring together OU as a community and foster new friendships. The students and staff that are around in the summer are able to relax without the hustle and bustle of the school year. Between free snocones on Tuesdays, the upcoming crawfish boil, and comedian performance, this summer looks promising and I am so glad to be spending my summer as a Sooner.

Leaves are changing colors. Jackets are coming out of closets… The University of Oklahoma is indeed a magical place in the fall.

This fall was a little different for me. In addition to going to class and studying, I was planning an arts festival. Yes, an arts festival. Let me explain: I am a Management major. I have no experience programming an arts festival. I’m not even a good artist. But planning an arts festival is exactly what I found myself doing; I was in charge of planning the inaugural Campus Activities Council’s Oklahoma Creativity Festival.

Seems like we all survived finals even though they seemed like they were going to kill us and with all the stress of finals also came the sadness that freshman year was almost over. Seeing everyone move out of the dorms was such a sad thing to experience. I think we all enjoyed our first year so much and are all sad it’s over. The day before my roommate and I moved out, we were packing up and kept repeating how we couldn’t believe we weren’t going to live in the dorm anymore and how close this year was from ending. We decided to come up with a few things that we either did or wish we did this past Freshman year.. So here they are a few FRESHMAN YEAR MUST DO’s…

On Monday night at 8 p.m., OU students made their way to the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom in the Union, where history was soon to be made. Sooners Helping Sooners, a new student initiative raising money for OU students in financial crisis, planned a World Record Trust Fall Event. The goal was to set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest simultaneous trust fall, which had to include at least 250 students (125 pairs). We danced, laughed, and hung out with our amazing Sooner family until we reached this goal. The excitement in the room was unbelievable as everyone trusted their partners and fell into their arms. Cameras flashed, and people cheered. We can all proudly say that we were a part of a record-breaking night.

To ensure you will get the best education at the University of Oklahoma, take advantage of the free tutoring that the University offers for any course you take at OU.

Chances are at least one of the courses you take will stump or challenge you. OU’s tutoring program is called UC Action and is CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certified. You can schedule small group appointments, online tutoring, faculty directed sessions or just walk in! Despite which option you choose, all of these opportunities will enable you to be successful in any of your courses.  UC Action is not just offered for your freshman level courses, but for all OU courses.

OU’s free tutoring program, UC Action, is a program many OU students utilize on a daily basis. This is just one of the many tools OU has implemented to give the support needed to our students. I encourage you to take advantage of UC Action once you step foot on campus! Boomer Sooner!

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend “Leader Summit”- a leadership workshop that is open for all OU students to attend. I didn’t really know what was in store when I first registered for this event, but now I’m glad I did!

Leader Summit is a 7-hour workshop, led by OU’s amazing LEAD Team, that provides leadership training, keynote speakers, and of course, food! I was amazed at how many students actually came to this event on a Saturday morning. Some of the activities at this workshop include: Break-out sessions with speakers, “Habitudes”- talking about different leadership topics, community service project – making place mats for a retired veterans home, and lunch!

It’s currently 3:33 in the morning and it is so sad that I think it is early. Here lately my life at OU has consisted of late night studying for finals… yes it’s crunch time! I have started to realize that, maybe it’s because I’m in my first semester, but I’m not really sure how to prepare at this point. I’ve been attending my classes, meeting my professors during office hours, and re-reading over my notes. Finals are difficult to describe. I feel prepared, yet I don’t! It’s an exciting feeling knowing the semester is almost over, yet frightening to think that my first college finals are here! I feel that the only thing getting me by at this point is knowing I get to go home in about a week, and start a fresh semester after that! I could not be more excited for next semester. I’ve learned so much this semester, both academically and about myself. This semester has been filled with wonderful things happening around campus… Have you heard about them?!  Read more

Hello everyone! I should probably start by introducing myself. My name is Kara and I am a freshman here at OU. My major is Public Relations and my minors are General Business and Spanish. So far, my freshman year has been a series of ups and downs! I am from Overland Park, Kansas, which is a suburb of Kansas City. Coming to OU as an out-of-state student and not knowing anyone was a lot harder than I imagined. It has taught me a lot about my ability to foster new relationships though. Everyone at OU is very welcoming, from the nice lady scanning Sooner OneCards at the cafeteria to the boy sitting next to me during a lecture in Dale Hall. Even in lonely moments, I find that there is always someone feeling the same way that I do. If any of you are considering coming to OU from out-of-state, don’t hesitate! It will challenge you and inspire you, but it’s very worth it!
