The Mentored Research Fellowship (MRF) award, sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research (O.U.R.), was given to five of Dr. Chung-Hao Lee’s undergraduate students. Each award is in the amount of $1000 for conducting undergraduate research projects in the Biomechanics and Biomaterials Design lab (BBDL).

The awardees are chosen based on the intellectual merit of the student’s submitted proposal (research project). The five students awarded from Dr. Lee’s research group are:

  • Devin Laurence (ME Senior under accelerated BS/MS program)
  • Robert Kunkel  (ME Senior under accelerated BS/MS program)
  • Samuel Jett  (ME Senior under accelerated BS/MS program)
  • Octavio Serrano  (ME Senior)
  • McKenzie Makovec  (ChemE Senior)

Dr. Lee’s BBDL research lab focuses on the following research areas:

  • Multiscale Biomechanical Modeling of the Cardiovascular Systems – Heart Valves
  • Characterization of Structural and Mechanical Properties of Soft Biological Tissues
  • Patient-Specific Modeling for Improved Diagnosis and Prophylactic Disease Management
  • Cell Mechanics and Mechanobiology Linking with Collagen Biosynthesis and Tissue Growth & Remodeling (G&R)
  • Advanced Finite Element and Meshfree Methods for Image-Based Computational Biomechanics

According to the MRF website, the Mentored Research Fellowship is a program to cultivate and support student-mentor relationships while working on a research or creative project. This is part of the Office of Undergraduate Research’s commitment to empowering students’ exploration. MRF is open to all University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus undergraduate students.

Two AME undergraduate students received prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) awards. Clayton Smith, junior in mechanical engineering, received the 2017 Tom J. Love Award. This is an outstanding student member award given to the most active student member of ASME at the University of Oklahoma. Clayton served as the president of ASME OU chapter in the 2016-2017 academic year. He has led multiple ASME events and has significantly increased membership for this student group.

Devin Laurence, junior in mechanical engineering, received the ASME Central Oklahoma Section Undergraduate Scholarship of $500. Devin served as the vice president of engagement of ASME OU chapter. He is currently working with AME faculty, Dr. Chung-Hao Lee, to pursue his accelerated master’s degree. He plans to continue his doctoral study after graduation.

The inaugural OU Giving Day was February 28, 2017. It was a 24-hour online fundraiser for scholarships to give everyone the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of OU students.

The funds raised on OU Giving Day go directly to the Gallogly College of Engineering unrestricted scholarship fund. Scholarships through this fund will be awarded to undergraduates and graduate students in any of the College’s seven schools of any major and awarded in 2017.

Gallogly College swept 2 of the 3 University competitions and will receive an additional $2,000, bringing the OU Giving Day total to $30,386! This means that 30 students will receive a scholarship this fall, and YOU made that possible.

On October 18th, 2016, Chevron Executives Ken Nelson, Bill Hunter and Brent Walton visited AME. Dr. Cengiz Altan and Dr. Zahed Siddique spoke with them about the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering’s mission, provided a talent overview and presented opportunities to engage with AME students.

Following the meeting, the Chevron executives attended a lunch and check presentation ceremony. Four AME students received the Chevron-Texaco Scholarship for the Fall 2016 semester. The scholarship recipients, Patrick Ahearn, Joseph Esparza, Ciore Taylor, and Joshua Tims, were invited to the luncheon where the guests presented the donation check. Congratulations!

AME Senior Christine Greve was recently chosen as a recipient of the Astronaut Foundation Scholarship. This foundation was created by the Mercury 7 Astronauts and their families to provide merit-based scholarships to the best and brightest university students who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The prestigious Astronaut Scholarship is known nationwide for being among the largest monetary scholarships awarded to undergraduate STEM students. Candidates for the scholarship must be nominated by their university professors and must exhibit leadership, imagination and exceptional performance in STEM.

Christine is a senior at the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma pursuing her bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and a minor in Spanish language.

Living in Alabama, Christine grew up around the space industry and had always had a love for it, but it wasn’t until her sophomore year of college when she realized her love of the space industry could also be turned into a career.

“I was looking at the different disciplines of engineering one morning when I realized that the college offered aerospace engineering,” said Christine. “The word ‘aerospace’ caught my attention, causing me to talk to one of the professors. About an hour after the conversation, I realized that I could actually pursue a job in the space industry and I was sold.”

As a selected recipient of the Astronaut Foundation Scholarship, it is no surprise that Christine has the credentials to back it up. She is a National Merit Scholar and has been on the University President’s Honor Roll, University’s Deans Honor Roll and the Gallogly College of Engineering Dean’s Honor Roll. In addition, she is a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Christine is a member of OU’s Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of Crimson Skies Design Build Fly.

Last summer, Christine interned at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where she characterized components of a propellant feed system through test design, data acquisition and data analysis. Since January 2016, Christine has continued her work with an independent study program through the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. During her ongoing independent study, she has been designing an attitude control system for cube satellites using pulsed plasma thrusters, modeling the satellite using SolidWorks for technical presentations, and communicating with professionals to better design a test satellite for optimal results.

As you may expect, Christine plans to work in the space industry after graduation in May 2017, and she also hopes to earn her graduate degree while continuing her research in the field of in-space propulsion.

“For my career, I see myself focusing on either electric or nuclear propulsion,”  said Christine. “I want to work towards the advancement of in-space propulsion for manned spacecraft to make interstellar travel an achievable goal in my lifetime. I want to offer new opportunities in spaceflight to help inspire younger generations to continue exploring the stars. I want to rekindle the flame that enabled the incredible engineering of the Apollo missions and that held the world captive as man first stepped onto the moon.”

Christine has big dreams. We think with her leadership, imagination and exceptional performance in STEM, she can achieve it.

Congratulations, Christine! We are proud of your accomplishments thus far, and we look forward to see what this year holds for you as the recipient of the Astronaut Foundation Scholarship!

The School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering recently celebrated the end of the school year with their annual Spring Senior Luncheon in conjunction to the Spring Board of Advisors’ (BOA) meeting. During the luncheon, Tommy Lear, BOA Chair, gave a keynote presentation. AME also celebrated the seniors and bid them farewell and good luck in their future endeavors. Lastly, AME honored two special groups of students. The first was the AME Undergraduate Outstanding Students and the second was the Graduate Student Scholarship Recipients. DSC_4958X

Alejandro Rivas is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering working Alejandro Rivas ASHRAE 5x7alongside Dr. Li Song. Recently, Alejandro received a joint scholarship from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and the Central Oklahoma American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He is the current President of the ASHRAE student chapter at OU, and he also attends many Central Oklahoma’s ASHRAE meetings and activities in Oklahoma City.

His research interests are in the field of energy efficiency, such as enhancing heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems’ performance with new control techniques that provide high accuracy with lower cost, and also airflow measurement for variable air volume (VAV) systems under field and testing conditions. Alejandro is currently working with Dr. Song, Dr. Gang Wang, Jesus Elizondo and Wesley Thomas on a research project at Tinker Air Force Base, which is sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD). The project is testing new technologies in flow measurement.

“With this research, I am looking forward to improving and updating the current airflow measurement industry methods and standards,” said Alejandro. “The final goal is to build a robust and accurate measurement method for HVAC researchers and contractors taking full advantage of what a VAV System has to offer in terms of energy savings.”

With plans to graduate with his M.S. degree in December 2016, Alejandro hopes to find a full-time job as an HVAC Design Engineer in the U.S. He also hopes to acquire the Professional Engineering License, as well as the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Certification. Furthermore, his long-term goal is nothing short of vast.

“I would like to have enough experience and knowledge to start my own HVAC Consulting Engineering Firm either in the U.S. or Venezuela,” said Alejandro. “In the future, I would like to be the leading HVAC Engineer in Venezuela by introducing all the latest technologies and ASHRAE standards that the Venezuelan HVAC industry has not yet implemented.”

Alejandro is from Caracas, Venezuela. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Reliability of Industrial Systems from the University Simon Bolivar in Caracas. After that he began working as an HVAC&R Engineer. Not long into his career, he realized there was a breach of information and experience that he wanted to fulfill through academics, which brought him to the U.S. in January 2015. He chose the University of Oklahoma School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering due to Dr. Song’s research.

“During my program search, I found Dr. Li Song’s research work at OU, and I felt that her research interest contained everything that I was looking for,” said Alejandro. “A global vision of the building where the architecture, materials of the envelope, heat load calculation, selection of mechanical equipment and design of the HVAC system are all important factors that need to be considered for improving the energy performance of the building.”

Alejandro_Venezuela2In addition to Alejandro’s research and academics, he enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at the beach and hiking in Venezuela. He also enjoys watching and playing sports. One of his favorite sports is baseball; he even played in college. Alejandro has a love for animals, especially his dog, Danna.

Recently several Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering graduate students received scholarships at AME’s senior luncheon.

Graduate Student Scholarships

Arun Balakrishnan received the Thomas Milam, Sr. Scholarship. Arun is a Ph.D. Candidate from India studying aerospace engineering. His research interests and objectives include biofuel combustion, characterization of global and in-flame properties of pre-vaporized and partially premixed laminar flames, investigation of NOx formation and mechanisms at various flame conditions.

Bipul Barua received the Frank Chuck Mechanical Engineering Scholarship. Bipul is a Ph.D. Candidate from Bangladesh studying mechanical engineering. His research interests and objectives include electrospinning, polymer nanofiber, carbon nano-fiber/tubes, composites, polymer foam, metal oxide and experiential learning.

Jelena Milisavljevic received the Conoco Phillips Scholarship. Jelena is a graduate student from Serbia pursing her master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Her research interests and objectives include complex systems, disorganized and organized complexity and robust and resilient multistage manufacturing (RRMM).

Oluwaseyi Ogunsola received the Jim and Bee Close and John E. Francis Scholarship. Oulwaseyi is a Ph.D. Candidate from Nigeria studying mechanical engineering. His research interests and objectives include development and validation of thermal models for HVAC systems control and optimization.

One of the remarkable legacies and contributions of AME is its significant interaction with industry. For over 100 years, our graduates have been a part of many well-respected companies. Our curricula and research activities have been helpful in building partnerships with industry. The collaboration of the internationally reputable Combustion and Flame Dynamics Lab at AME and John Zink Company is an example. The John Zink Company is an Oklahoma based a worldwide leader in burner manufacturing. In an effort to ensure that the next generation of energy and technology leaders will come from our graduates at the University of Oklahoma, a memorandum of understanding between the OU College of Engineering and John Zink Company was signed in 2007 through which funds are made available to support graduate students in the field of combustion. The memorandum was signed by Dr. S. R. Gollahalli, then Director of AME and head of the Combustion and Flame Dynamics Lab and Dr. Joseph Colannino, then Director of Research and Development of John Zink Company. The company founded in 1929 by John Steele Zink (an OU graduate), currently a division of the Koch group of companies, is a leader in the design and development of flares, process burners and boiler burners.

Since 2008, sixteen graduate students have been supported with the annual funding provided by John Zink Company. These students, designated as “John Zink Company Scholars,” are honored with individual awards from John Zink Company and certificates from AME. The students also take one of the several short courses on combustion that are offered at John Zink Company in Tulsa. In addition, their names are engraved in a plaque in Felgar Hall. John Zink Company is notified when the students are ready to graduate to provide the company with an opportunity to recruit them. The generous gift from John Zink Company has been helpful to the success of our AME graduate students in the field of combustion. Past John Zink Scholars are enjoying successful careers in industry (John Zink Company, Boeing, Schlumberger,) and academia (University of Texas-El Paso).

For the past several years, Dr. Charles E. Baukal Jr. has visited AME with some of his colleagues to present awards to the John Zink Scholars. Dr. Baukal is the director of the John Zink Institute and has been with John Zink Company since 1998. On March 27, 2015, Dr. Baukal presented awards to the John Zink Scholars for 2014-2015, Arun Balakrishnan, Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, and Mohammad Imran, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

The School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering graduate committee is currently soliciting applicants for three fellowships to be awarded in the coming weeks. The fellowship names, award requirements and award amounts are as follows:

  • BP Fellowship (ME Graduate Student), $7500.00
  • Frank Chuck Mechanical Engineering Fellowship (ME Graduate Student with at least 3.0 GPA), $5000.00
  • Thomas Millam Sr. (AE Graduate Student, Oklahoma Resident, 3.0 GPA), $7500

These awards will be given out on a competitive basis following a review of the application material by the Graduate Committee.  Application material provided by the applicants shall include a cover letter and a CV. Selection of awards will be based on evidence of scholarship, accomplishment and potential, judged from the applicant’s CV. Some categories of evidence which will be actively considered by the Graduate Committee include (but are not limited to):

  • Journal publications
  • Patent Awards
  • Research Awards (e.g. best paper in international journal, best paper in national/international conference, etc.)
  • Reviewed Book Chapters
  • Full Peer Reviewed Conference Articles
  • Abstract Reviewed Conference Articles
  • Extended Abstracts
  • Published Abstracts
  • Invited Talks
  • Seminars
