Sooner Off-Road Team Has Their Most Successful Year

Since 2010, Sooner Off-Road has engineered a vehicle at the University of Oklahoma. Every year they design, manufacture, and compete with a Baja SAE vehicle. Baja SAE consists of three competitions that simulate real-world engineering projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are given a mission to design and build a single-seat, all-terrain, sporting vehicle that performs well with speed, handling, ride, and ruggedness over rough terrain and off-road conditions. This year the team was led by co-captains Ben Basden and Advika Kamatar and their advisor Dr. Chris Dalton to their most successful year ever!

The Sooner Off-Road team was able to compete in three events this year. One in-person event and, because of Covid-19, one event that took place virtually. In these events the team competed against teams from across the US as well as universities from around the world.

In the virtual competition, the team received 9th place in design presentation, 3rd in the business presentation, and 1st place in the cost presentation. Each of those results is the best the Sooner Off-Road team has ever done in the respective events. Overall, they ended up in 7th place, which is a fantastic result for the team!

For the in-person competition, they achieved 12th in maneuverability, 9th in hill climb, 3rd in suspension, and 2nd in acceleration.  Out of 45 teams who attempted the suspension course, they were one of only three teams to actually complete it. Amazingly, this is the best the Sooner Off-Road team has ever done in those events as well!

We are very proud of the Sooner Off-Road team and congratulate them for their tremendous success!

Boomer Rocket Team and Sooner Off-Road Begin Their Thousands Strong Campaigns!

This month, Boomer Rocket Team and Sooner Off-Road kicked off their Thousands Strong Campaigns! These student teams want your support to help them get to competition.

Sooner Off-Road is a student team that designs, manufactures, and races an off-road vehicle for the Baja SAE competition. They are hoping to raise $7,000 before their Thousands Strong campaign ends on December 5, 2020, at 11:55 p.m. The money donated to them will go towards the construction of the vehicle, software used for design, and travel expenses. As of today, they have reached 53% of their goal, and they could use your help! Donate to Sooner Off-Road by visiting their Thousands Strong website: https://thousandsstrong.ou.edu/project/22820

Boomer Rocket Team is a group of multidisciplinary engineering students dedicated to the design, construction, and launch of high powered rockets. BRT hopes to raise $3,000 before their Thousands Strong campaign ends on December 11, 2020, at 11:55 p.m. The money they receive will be used to purchase materials and send students to the Argonia Cup in Kansas. So far, they have reached 54% of their goal, and they need your help! Visit BRT’s Thousands Strong website to donate: https://thousandsstrong.ou.edu/project/22934

Thank you for your support!

Student Team Updates

SOONER OFF-ROAD TEAM

On May 16, the Sooner Off-Road team traveled to California for the Baja SAE competition. In the competition, engineering students were tasked with designing and building a single-seat, all-terrain sporting vehicle.

The Sooner Off-Road team was able to pass technical inspection and brake check on the first day of the competition. Additionally, they received 13th place in the suspension & traction event, 12th place in the sales presentation, 100/150 points in the design presentation, and 30th in the endurance race. The team finished 34th overall. The team and their advisors are very proud of the results!

On September 21, the team also attended the Midnight Mayhem Competition at the University of Lousiville. They took two vehicles to the competition, the 2019 competition vehicle, Isabella #12, and the 2018 competition vehicle, Valerie #41. They competed against 100 other teams in the competition and finished with successful results.

SOONER RACING TEAM

The Sooner Racing Team had a successful competition at Formula SAE Lincoln, an engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate students. The team traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska from June 19-22 and exceeded their goals for the competition.

The Sooner Racing Team received 14th in the cost event, 14th in fuel efficiency, 22nd in endurance, 26th in acceleration, 29th in design, and a 10th place award for the quality of their engineering drawings. They finished the competition 33rd overall out of the 80 teams. Additionally, the team got through technical inspections in the first two days with only minor adjustments needed, completed all of the static and dynamic events, and finished the endurance race. Overall, the team is very happy with the results and the way the car came out this year!

BOOMER ROCKET TEAM

Boomer Rocket Team received 3rd place at the Argonia cup competition. The event took place in Argonia, Kansas from March 30-31, 2019.

The competition objective was to launch a rocket-powered vehicle in excess of 8,000’ AGL. The rocket had to contain a golf ball payload, and the team had to recover the payload safely at a predetermined location on the rocket range.

FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

OU Thousands Strong is OU’s official crowdfunding platform. It serves as an online tool to help students, faculty and staff display select projects and raise funds to turn their ambitious ideas into reality. Two AME student teams are currently running campaigns, Sooner Off-Road and OU Boomer Rocket Team. Design, Build, Fly will be starting a campaign in the near future.

Giving Day Results are in!

AME raised $10,809 on OU Giving Day, which took place on September 10, 2019. All donations went towards the Gollahalli Legacy Fund benefiting instructional labs.

Instructional labs will use this money to improve and modernize their technology and provide better hands-on experience to undergraduate students. Special thanks to AME board member David Raney for issuing our 2019 AME Donor Challenge. He unlocked $1,000 once AME raised $2,000.

Congratulations to Sooner Off-Road who took 3rd place in the College Competition Team fundraising challenge by raising $1,355 for their team!

Thank you to everyone who chose to donate to our school!

Sooner Off-Road Participates in Midnight Mayhem Competition

On September 21, Sooner Off-Road participated in the Midnight Mayhem competition at the Drop Forge Proving Grounds at the University of Louisville. They competed against 100 other teams in the competition and finished with successful results.

Twelve Sooner Off-Road members attended the competition and all of them had the opportunity to drive. They took two vehicles to the competition, the 2019 competition vehicle, Isabella #12, and the 2018 competition vehicle, Valerie #41.

Valerie #41 results:

50th Acceleration 5.32 seconds over 150ft

50th Maneuverability

50th Baja Cross, a suspension testing event

Isabella #12 results:

In the 4-hour endurance race:

Car #12 peaked in 3rd place before it broke a rear suspension component. They were able to repair the vehicle and get back on track and complete a few more laps before the end of the race. The car’s final place was 24th with a final lap time of 2 minutes and 51 seconds.

Car #41 peaked in 15th place before breaking a front suspension component and coming out of the race for the remainder of the time. The car’s final place was 41st with a best lap time of 3 minutes and 11 seconds.

Shell Fall Festival Gives Students an Opportunity to Get Involved in AME Organizations

Shell Fall Festival occurred in the engineering quad on August 23 where new and returning students had the opportunity to learn about several student organizations. Students also enjoyed a dunk tank and other carnival games, free hamburgers, snow cones and t-shirts, and networking opportunities with Shell and Schlumberger. Below are some of the student organizations that participated in the festival!
