This summer, after being chosen for a $10,000 grant to promote peace, three OU students carried out their project proposal to provide menstrual health education in India.

Senior Pranav Mohan, senior Cindy Belardo and graduate student Abhishek Yadav won United World Colleges’ Davis Project for Peace Grant after forming a proposal to travel to India to educate women about menstrual health. This summer they put the proposal into action with Mohan travelling to villages and schools in Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and educating women about menstrual health in areas where it is a taboo subject.

“Menstruation is a topic of taboo and it’s also a topic of shame,” said Mohan. “We wanted to create that friendly environment where women can talk about it. Menstruation is such a thing that it creates a pressure, it creates a boundary around women where they are not able to open up, where they are bounded, so we wanted to break those cages and empower them.”

Yadav said that Mohan and Belardo were very passionate about the subject and his role was to help them do the research to find their main focus point, which was educating women about the menstrual cup.

The lack of education about menstrual health means that women aren’t aware of all their options and it can make menstruation a negative experience for women, said Mohan, a mechanical engineering major. Mohan said the team sees the menstrual cup as the best menstrual health option for many women.

Mohan said that there are a variety of reasons they suggest women use the menstrual cup, including that it lasts up to 12 hours, there’s less of a risk of toxic shock syndrome as there is in tampons, you can use the same cup for 8-10 years, it’s silicone so it molds to your body comfortably and it’s environmentally friendly and cheap.

Belardo, an environmental studies pre-medicine major, was involved the preparation and organization of the project. After the group conducted research, the information they gathered was used to create manuals which they gave to volunteers from the NGO they worked with, Belardo said. They chose to use the volunteers to speak with the women because they felt that it would be easier to hear about menstrual health coming from Indian women they could relate to, she added.

“Basically we were kind of showing the pro’s and con’s of using cloth, that was like the primary use of most of the ladies there, so like what are the good things, bad things, and then also disposable pads,” Belardo said. “Then we also showed the pro’s and con’s of menstrual cups, so we looked at all of them and they could decide from there if they want to try it, so it’s in their hands.”

Mohan said there were about 12 seminars lead by the volunteers, each 2 hour long sessions, reaching around 300 women. Though 300 seems like a small number, he said the women are likely to talk about the menstrual cup with their friends and spread the idea by word-of-mouth.

Mohan said the students bought the menstrual cup in bulk and sold it at a cheaper price to the women, with 138 buying one. One of the volunteers is following up with the women who chose to try the menstrual cup to see if they are experiencing any problems and if they like it, Belardo said.

Other than promoting the menstrual cup, their main purpose was to educate, Belardo said.

“The whole premise of this project is to talk about menstruation and trying to break that taboo, which is here too, like even for me, my own life, I was not comfortable talking about that and especially also in India,” Belardo said. “So that’s our main goal, just to educate. A lot of women don’t even realize what is happening to their body, and to me, that’s a right just to know, it’s such a natural process, you shouldn’t be ashamed, you shouldn’t be embarrassed.”

On August 5th 2018, Dr. Hays’ research group in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering launched two 12.5 ft.-tall, 60+-pound rockets carrying customer payloads in Argonia, Kansas.  Undergraduate aerospace engineering students Alex Speed, Trevor Trevino, Christopher Hughes, William Wadkins and Jarrod Manning successfully built and flew the two rocket systems with assistance from Dr. Hays.

 

Senior aerospace engineering student Alex Speed obtained the University’s first undergraduate Tripoli Rocket Association Level 3 certification as a result of his successful launch of “Godspeed.”  The second launch of “Spednik” brought OU Aerospace into the supersonic realm by reaching Mach 1.15.  Both rockets successfully delivered customer data from the payload, and were tracked directly to their landing site using Telemega GPS telemetry systems.

The AME department would like to thank our payload customer, the Kansas ‘Kloudbusters,’ and Tulsa TRA prefecture members for their help in making the launch such a success.

Two of our AME undergraduate students, Janella Clary and Colton Ross, received ASME awards on April 26th. Janella received the Tom J. Love Outstanding ASME Student Member Award from ASME Central Oklahoma Section while Colton received the ASME Central Oklahoma Section Undergraduate Scholarship of $500.

Janella Clary a senior from League City, Texas, is a mechanical engineer major with minors in business, Spanish, and international studies. She’s involved in the Gallogly College of Engineering as well as an active member of SHPE, SWE, ASME, MEP, and AISES. Last year she was the secretary for OU’s ASME chapter and this year she is serving as president. Additionally, Janella is involved in the OU Triathlon team, OU Sailing Club, Global Engagement Fellows, and OU Cousins. Recently, she has completed two internships with Exxon Mobil in Spring, Texas, as an offsites and utilities engineer and she will intern with them again for this summer. Next year she will be graduating in June 2019 and plans to start with Exxon Mobil fulltime after graduation, unless she is selected for the Fulbright award, then she plans on completing an independent research project at OU starting in September 2019.                                                                                Colton Ross, who is a junior mechanical engineering major, is a new member of the ASME student chapter. Currently, he is an undergraduate researcher working with his mentor and future M.S. thesis advisor, Dr. Chung-Hao Lee, in the Biomechanics and Biomaterials Design Laboratory. Colton has presented at the ASME/AIAA sponsored symposium, hosted by OCU, in April. His future plans include pursuing his accelerated master’s degree as well as furthering his education through a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering. Congratulations go out to both Colton and Janella on their ASME awards and future endeavors.

AME’s student wind tunnel design team recently accepted an award in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the weekend of April 13th at the student conference of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Representing the team, Karen Martinez Soto traveled to the conference to accept the 2nd place award on behalf of her team for the AIAA region IV team technical paper category. In addition to Soto, her teammates include Samuel Jett, Orhan Roksa, and Marko Mestrovic, who are all undergraduate students at AME.                                         Their paper highlights the design, fabrication, and uniformity testing of a low-budget, wind tunnel. With a budget of only $5,000, their group examined characteristics of wind tunnels through computer models and they continued their study further by building a tunnel of their own to test other aerodynamic components. The focus of their design and construction for this tunnel, according to their paper, serves to provide “a robust platform for development and testing of many aerodynamics components, including UAV propellers.” Congratulations to Karen, Samuel, Orhan, and Marko for their impressive efforts to design and test a wind tunnel and their 2nd place award from the AIAA student conference.

Devin Laurence, a senior mechanical engineering student at AME, recently participated in the 2018 Research Day at the Capitol in Oklahoma City on March 27, 2018.  The poster competition is presented and sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Oklahoma Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and the National Science Foundation. The event offers an opportunity for nominated, undergraduate students currently enrolled in Oklahoma universities to present science-based research to a panel of judges, State Legislators as well as the public. He was required to give a brief oral presentation regarding his poster’s topic, participate in a short Q&A session with a panel of judges, as well as present a technical abstract on his topic.   

Devin received the Grand Prize for his presentation on: “Integrated Experimental-Computational Approach for Multiscale Investigations of Atrioventricular Heart Valves With Applications to Individual-Optimized Surgery Planning.”  His prize included a $500 award as well as a $4,000 summer research internship. A hearty congratulations goes out to Devin on his success for presenting at the capitol and for the recognition of this prestigious award.

AME congratulates Pranav Mohan, an undergraduate student at AME, for his recent success and awards. Pranav, along with Abhishek Yadav, an industrial and systems engineering major, and Cindy Belarado, an environmental studies and pre-med major, crafted a proposal titled, “Money Spent Right – Menstrual Cup for Women’s Empowerment.” They were awarded $10,000 for their distinguished proposal. Both Janet K. Allen and Farrokh Mistree mentored Pranav and Abhishek through this project proposal. 

Additionally, Pranav is one of 20 OU male juniors and seniors to be recognized with the “Big Men on Campus” award this year. This award aims to recognize students for their outstanding accomplishments in leadership, service, honors, and academics. Pranav exemplifies each of these qualities and will be recognized at the campus awards ceremony on April 17th for his distinctions. Congratulations go out to Pranav, Abhishek, and Cindy for their successful project proposal and to Pranav for receiving the prestigious “Big Men on Campus” award. 

The Sooner Racing Team is utilizing the Thousands Strong crowdfunding platform to raise money for their upcoming competition. The campaign started February 19, 2018 and ends March 23, 2018 at 11:59 PM. As of today the team had reached 79% of their total goal. The Sooner Racing Team is an OU student organization that designs, builds, tests, and races an open-wheel, formula-style race car. Each year, we compete against teams from around the world. Our team wants to take our 2018 car to the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition in Lincoln, Nebraska, but we need your help getting there!

How You Can Help

Formula SAE competitions provide invaluable professional experience for our team members. We learn hands-on skills and have the opportunity to network with businesses in the automotive field as well as with students from 550 other universities around the world. For the past seven months, our team has been hard at work designing and manufacturing our 2018 car, but we need your financial support to get it to the competition. Your donations will help cover travel costs to get us on the road, and if we exceed our goal of $5,000, extra funds will be put towards purchasing new sets of racing tires.

Our Team

The Sooner Rover Team was founded in the Fall semester of 2015 by a small group of students that were interested in space and robotics who saw a very successful competition year, bringing home the highest score the NASA RASC-AL Robo Ops Competition has ever seen! Since then, the team has grown to more than 60 students who are eager to manufacture a competition ready rover. We will be taking on the same competition as last year: The University Rover Challenge! Among the students on the team over 10 majors are represented including Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Geology/Geophysics, Mathematics, and Astrophysics.

Our Need

We need your support! Let’s start off by saying that $10,000 is a very beginning goal for us and we are aiming to raise at least 15,000!! Last year, the team raised over $17,000 with the help of supporters like you. This year, the University Rover Challenge aims to once again test the bounds of our team. This is an exciting task for the Sooner Rover Team and we can’t wait to overcome the new challenges set before us. Our Rover

The Sooner Rover is based off of a Russian design concept (the Marsokhad) and this will be the third year we compete with this design. We believe it was our take on this design, along with a unique control system, that has set us apart. We plan to keep the best of what we had last year and improve in every area that we can. This year’s rover will also need on board equipment to run scientific analysis that will determine characteristics such as soil humidity and subsurface temperature. These improvements, however, will require better parts and cost more money.

Our Competition

The Sooner Rover Team will be competing in the 2018 University Rover Challenge from May 31st – June 2nd. The competition will be held at the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) near Hanksville, Utah. Teams will face a variety of obstacles and are required to be completely untethered (wireless) and controlled from a remote location along with navigating terrain challenges, autonomous traversal, science caching, retrieval and delivery tasks, and more. Only with your support can we bring home a victory!
