It is that time of the year again–midterms. Look at how fast this semester is flying by! If this is your first round of college midterms or if you just haven’t quite found your studying groove, we’ve compiled a list of study tips that will help you breeze through exams.
This is the most important tip to remember! Get a planner, use Google Calendar, make a spreadsheet; do it in a way that fits your personality, but definitely make time to study.
It is all too easy to get distracted or fall asleep because your brain will refuse to go into work mode. Find a study lounge in your hall, or start looking for other study spots around campus. If you’re not sure where to start the search, check out this list of our favorite outdoor study spots! While studying at night, use your desk or even try sitting on the floor. It may not be as comfy as your bed, but your body will know it is not time to relax.
It’s great that you and your friends want to study together. If you’re studying for a big exam, however, form a study group with people from your classes. They’ll be able to explain what you don’t understand, and you will be less likely to get sidetracked.
Repetition is the best way to retain information. If you’re using pen and paper in class, type up lecture notes once you get home. Summarize main ideas from the lesson or expand on two-word key points while the information is fresh in your mind.
Not all professors will prepare a study guide for exams. Get in the habit of making your own, and write down terms and key points on index cards. You can always ask your roommate to quiz you on them, and it’s a great form of repetition.
If you’re studying notes and reading materials for an exam, break up the bulk of your work by taking small breaks to let your brain recharge. If you’re writing a paper, finish a solid final draft at least 12 hours before it’s due. Then you can look over it again in the morning with fresh eyes.
Sleep deprivation reduces cognitive skills. Essentially, your brain will feel foggy, you’ll find it harder to concentrate and will find yourself “zoning out.” Instead, go to bed at a good hour and wake up early to study. A good night’s rest is key to getting the grade you want!
