Spring Break in Sooner Style

Spring Break is right around the corner and that means a full week of relaxing and avoiding responsibility. While some people are jetting off to the beach or a ski lodge, you may find yourself staying here in Sooner Nation for the week. Without school or homework, Norman can be just as thrilling as these vacation destinations. So, without further ado, allow me to be your staycation travel agent and plan the perfect Spring Break without even leaving Cleveland County.

Monday is going to be a warm and sunny day; so, it will be the perfect day to spend time outdoors! The Sutton Wilderness Trail provides all the fun of hiking without the worry of getting lost in the woods. If hiking doesn’t sound all that great to you, you could also try your hand at disc golf. There is a disc golf course not too far away from the trail entrances. Still not convinced to spend the day outside? If you or a friend own a dog, you can also spend the day at the Norman Community Dog Park. What could be better than sunshine and pups? Answer: Nothing.

Tuesday is food themed! Spend the day trying restaurants in Norman that you haven’t gone to before! Whether you find yourself at Campus Corner, Main Street or a campus restaurant you haven’t been to yet, Norman has plenty of mouth-watering menus to try. To end the day, stop by Othello’s for their Open Mic Comedy Night! If you’re feeling like stepping out of your comfort zone, sign-ups for the open mic start at 9 p.m. If being on stage is not your thing, enjoy the laughs when the show starts at 10 p.m.

Nothing can beat a day at the ballpark and supporting the Sooners!

Wednesday features a doubleheader of baseball and softball so make sure you have enough peanuts and cracker jacks to get you through the afternoon. The baseball team plays New Mexico at 2 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park and then the softball team faces North Texas at 6 p.m. at Marita Hynes Field. Come cheer on your Sooners!

OU features two of the most fascinating museums in the state and the best part is that they both give free admission to students! The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History showcases the natural history of the state, as well as a timeline of the Earth’s history. Sam Noble features some of the most impressive artifacts and fossils and has special exhibits, too. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is a peaceful environment with beautiful pieces you can get lost in for hours. If you’re up for a short road trip, the Timberlake Rose Rock Museum in Noble has beautiful rose rock creations and clusters that you can view for free.

In my opinion, the best part about Friday is the new movies premiering that weekend. On the Friday of Spring Break, Jordan Peele is releasing his next great horror film, “Us”, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. I have to cover my eyes every time the trailer plays. It is that creepy! Treat yourself to a movie night with friends or date night and head to the Warren in Moore!

Spring Break still happens over the weekend, too! And that’s good news because the number 1 ranked OU women’s gymnastics team will be competing at the Lloyd Noble Center at 1 p.m. in the Big 12 Women’s Gymnastics Championship. Come out and support our elite gymnastics team one last time this season.

The fun doesn’t have to stop there! If you weren’t scared enough watching “Us”, there is going to be a Downtown Norman Ghost Tour at 9 p.m. on Saturday night! Make sure to meet the tour guide at the Pioneer Teacher statue and hear all the spooky stories of the Norman of the past!

The week will have been spent with so much fun that it’ll be hard to believe it’s over when Sunday comes around. So, take time on Sunday to relax and reorganize before the school week starts again. You’ll probably also have to catch up on homework after spending your week having fun. Even though Spring Break will be over, there are only seven weeks of school until summer vacation!

Have a safe and smart Spring Break, Sooners!
