In May 2015, Profs. Deepak Devegowda and Xingru Wu traveled to Lima, Peru with a group of 20 MPGE students led by Yoana Walschap, MCEE Study Abroad Liaison, and one extra coordinator, Naïla Williams. The two electives courses, Improved Recovery Techniques and Well Test Analysis, were taught not only to the OU students but to 34 Peruvians comprised of students, faculty and energy industry personnel who participated in both courses. Partial funding for these courses was provided thanks to the generosity of OU Peruvian alum Igor Salazar, currently the General Manager for PeruLNG. Mr. Salazar invited the group to tour the Melchorita LNG Plant South of Lima, the biggest plant in Latin America, where gas is liquefied.
At the end of the course, the group enjoyed an unforgettable trip to the Andes with visits to Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley of the Incas, Lake Titicaca and the floating Islands of Uros and Taquile. A humble and unique homestay experience with a Quecha family for one night at Amantani Island provided a couple of days of no Wi-Fi, no electricity and no shower opportunities for the group!
