Last Thursday, Sept 2nd:

After my Vis Comm design studio class, I took off to visit OKC and the beautiful Health Sciences Center for the University of Oklahoma. We were on a day-long Recruitment Services retreat to plan our campaign for the year so we didn’t get to spend too much time wandering across the HSC campus, but what little I saw of it I LOVED. It was just as gorgeous as our Norman campus is. Now, I’ve never even considered going into any medical profession, but if you’re considering Nursing, Dentistry, Physical Therapy and all the other health-oriented careers, OU HSC is something you need to look into. As for me, I’m perfectly content with my art degree. 🙂

Friday, Sept 3rd

Several other Vis Comm students and I went to Michelangelo’s, a cute coffee shop in downtown Norman, to visit one of our friends who works there as a barista. There was a live band playing, and they put on a very good performance. I got a slice of the “Just Enough Chocolate Cake,” which ironically turned out to be just a little too much cake for me to eat, though it was absolutely delicious. Meacham Auditorium, located in the Union, was playing a free screening of Sex and the City 2, which I really wanted to see, but I was just too tired from the crazy classes to make it. I’m not too broken-hearted since Friday night is ALWAYS movie night at the Union. I’ve seen Twilight and Kung Fu Panda there in the past, and they’re really good about bringing in movies that haven’t been out that long. Definitely something to take advantage of when you’re on campus!

Saturday, Sept 4th

It’s game day in Norman! I got ready in one of my many OU tees and a crimson hair bow, and watched the flood of people flock to campus. I ate on campus at our new pasta shop in Cate Center Food Court and then helped myself to a delicious chocolate cupcake from Roscoe’s, one of our coffee shops. Yum! I walked around Lindsey Street and talked with some of the people tailgating for the game, and got excited for the football season to start. Although I didn’t attend the game, being a part of the energy and excitement was so much fun. There’s nothing like OU football and the pride that comes with it. Boomer Sooner!

Sunday, Sept 5th

I spent the day back in Edmond with my family, and it was so wonderful just to visit with them and see my kitty cats again. For those students whose furry friends might not be as close to campus as mine are, Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter in Norman, offers a program called “Doggy Day Out” where you can go pick up a dog for the day and take him or her out to play. This allows the dog to get some exercise and interaction, and lets homesick students volunteer in a super fun way. I did this once with my roommate my freshman year, and I know she loved playing fetch with the dog on our beautiful South Oval. I’m more of a cat person myself, and you can’t exactly pick up a cat for the day, but the staff there will let you hang out at the shelter with their cats if that’s more your style.

Monday, Sept 6th

Since it was Labor Day, there weren’t any classes, which means this turned into homework day for me.

A project we submitted for my Visual Communication class

Looks like a glorified barcode, right? Well, it’s actually a line study. Here was the assignment: In a 10″ x 10″ section, use five vertical and parallel black lines of different weights in a random study, meaning that there may be no intervals in which line weights set up a pattern (thin to thick, thick to thin), and pay attention that the white spaces are also different weights both from each other and from the black lines and that the spaces also do not exhibit any intervals. It’s a lot to keep track of, and is much more difficult than you would think. But after a few tries, I finally got it.

Tuesday, Sept 7th

A free advanced movie screening was held in Meacham Auditorium for Easy A, a film set to release Sept 17th. I attended with a friend, and thought it was hilarious! Definitely worth seeing in theaters, in my opinion. 🙂 Tuesdays are also bread bowl soup days at Couch Express, a restaurant located on the first floor of my residence hall. Yummy! So that’s where I had dinner Tuesday night.

Wednesday, Sept 8th

Now this is where things got interesting for me. A late night in the Art studio led to a little accident with an Xacto knife… let me tell you, those blades are sharp! I let my concentration waver for a second as I was cutting some paper, and wound up slicing off a little bit of my finger. Now, it sounds worse than it is, I promise. It’s a fairly superficial wound, so I bandaged it and kept on trekking. Yes, it hurts, but, well, that’s why you have to pay attention all the time. Learned my lesson! I wound up visiting Goddard today, which is our health clinic, and having a doctor check it out to make sure no amputation was needed. As a hypochondriac, I had at one point thought that my finger looked a little blue and was becoming numb, and my tendency to overreact left me scared that drastic measures would need to be taken. So it just seemed best to have it checked out. My doctor was so friendly and assured me that my small wound would be just fine on its own and my finger would be back to normal with time. She showed me how to properly bandage my wound so that it can heal without scarring, and gave me the peace of mind I needed.

Thursday, Sept 9th

The Graphic Design Association (GDA) brought in a speaker to give a free public lecture on campus, which happens several times a year. Last year, Jay Shuster from Pixar came to talk, and today we had the opportunity to listen to Sol Sender, a graphic designer who created the logo for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. It was incredible to hear him talk about the process he and his team went through to come up with Obama’s logo, and to see the other logo designs that they went through before the famous O was chosen. As a student member of GDA, I and about 10 other students wound up getting the opportunity to have lunch with Sol as well! Sitting down over a meal with him and hearing about his education and career was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. These are the kinds of opportunities that await you at OU!

I’m off for now! Feel free to drop me a line in the comments if you have anything to say or ask, and I’ll see you next time!
