Hello everyone! I should probably start by introducing myself. My name is Kara and I am a freshman here at OU. My major is Public Relations and my minors are General Business and Spanish. So far, my freshman year has been a series of ups and downs! I am from Overland Park, Kansas, which is a suburb of Kansas City. Coming to OU as an out-of-state student and not knowing anyone was a lot harder than I imagined. It has taught me a lot about my ability to foster new relationships though. Everyone at OU is very welcoming, from the nice lady scanning Sooner OneCards at the cafeteria to the boy sitting next to me during a lecture in Dale Hall. Even in lonely moments, I find that there is always someone feeling the same way that I do. If any of you are considering coming to OU from out-of-state, don’t hesitate! It will challenge you and inspire you, but it’s very worth it!

You will come to feel right at home because there is so much to get involved in. Luckily, I am blessed to have a sorority house full of sisters who want to get to know me and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. (If any of you girls are considering whether to rush- DO IT! If anyone wants some pointers for rush- ASK ME!) There are many campus ministries and local churches that offer great services and fellowship. There are clubs for any interest or hobby. Truly, there are people everywhere looking to meet new people.

Currently I am busy with University Sing practices. Basically, a sorority and fraternity pair up and create a 12 minute mini-musical with songs and dances. Then they compete against the other Greek houses. It is just for freshmen and is a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work! I really hope we make it to the finale show! The houses have to try out in front of judges and only six sorority and fraternity pairs make the USing show. It is a big time commitment, but it’s such a great way to meet even more people!

I am finding out that college teaches students way more than the information found in textbooks. Each day I learn something new, whether that be that I am terrible at remembering new people’s names, or that Raising Cane’s is way too tempting and delicious. I know before I came to college I was stressing about rush, what to bring for my dorm, ordering the right textbooks, and how I was going to find my way. It truly all works out. Let me know if anyone out there wants some tips on starting out freshman year right… I am learning from a process of trial and error! Freshman year is definitely stressful and busy, but in a great way! Boomer Sooner!
