If you are not familiar with the skill of time management, learn ASAP! Here at OU, there’s so much for you to do almost all the time. This doesn’t mean that you’re just bombarded with homework 24/7, but more like this huge combination of school, organizations, friends, and (hopefully) sleep. It’s really not like high school when you have a lot to do from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then something after school; instead, you always have something to do. That being said, this is NOT a bad thing at all! I love always having things to do and people to see! 🙂 However, if you don’t know how to use your time most efficiently, it can get extremely overwhelming.

Some tips to stay ahead of the game:

1. Buy a planner. This is extremely important! If I didn’t have my planner, I would forget half of the things I have to do or assignments that need to be done. OU also gives you a planner at the beginning of the year. Personally, I chose to go buy a bigger folder-size one because I could decorate it any way that I wanted.

2. Learn to say no: You’ve probably never lived with 4,000 other people your age before, so it’s really easy to get distracted and want to go hang out with them. For example, the girls on my hall always migrate into the TV lounge or study room and sometimes it can be distracting when you’re trying to work. However, remember that school comes first here! Make sure you’re allowing yourself enough time to get your work done before agreeing to seeing a movie or hanging out in the TV room.

3. Don’t forget to relax. Make sure you give yourself a break! Getting involved in too many activities and spreading yourself thin happens to a lot of people, and when it does, it is time to take a step back and just de-stress. Whether this be through exercise, watching a movie, or just taking a nap, time for yourself is also very important.
