Summer Fashion: Cheat Sheet

This weekend it rained and rained some more, so what did I do while holed up in my little apartment alone?  I tried on tiers of light weight cotton, devoured the purples, blues, pinks, and oranges of summer, and contemplated the mystery of the skinny jean (can they really be worn by everyone?) all by shopping online.

That’s right.  I got a jump start on summer fashion by ignoring the depressing weather and exploring a world where scarves, belts, necklaces could be mine with just a click of the mouse.  I had to have restraint though.  It’s not as if my bank account is currently at the $500 mark much less the the thousands.

It was so hard to turn down my first love: shoes!  I wanted, no needed new peep-toe pumps, sandals, and wedges.  Normally, I’d just go run off the urge to purchase perfectly crafted shoes that could not only make me three inches taller, but also come in black and red, but I couldn’t.  I think you’re getting the idea: it’s a very bad idea to shop online when you don’t have will power and there’s nothing else for me, you to do.

Trust me, I won’t compulsively shop again…maybe.  Anyways,  as my frustration came to a high, a light bulb when off, and I knew just what to do to keep me from clicking ‘buy’.  I decided to make a wish list of sorts of all the must have looks for the upcoming season, and now I’ve decided to share it with you.  Because not everyone has a rainy day to sit around and shop and who doesn’t love a cheat sheet?

1.  Playing in the Sun

Summer is all about letting loose and embracing your playful side, so why don’t you try a pair of beaded sandals like these from Nina.  At only $92.95, these sandals will go perfectly with any sweet summer dress.  I’d pair them with the rainbow red Macrame Jesrsey Dress from Banana Repulic because a bright punch of color gives off a confident sunny attitude that’s sure to make any guy melt.

2.  Work It

If you’re sick of wearing slacks to work, then give this faux suit look a try on casual Friday.  Roll up a pair of DKNY white jeans, only $69.00, then slip on a white fitted blazer like the “Patil” jacket from Antonio Melani (available at Dillards).  Wear unbuttoned and push up the sleeves, so that you’ve got a cool casual vibe.  Make sure to wear a lightweight girlie top under to keep your feminine allure.  And finally ditch the heels for these scrumptious Liza satin peep-toe flats from J. Crew.

3.  Dive In

I know, I know, no one really wears heels to the beach or even to layout at the pool, but what about a pool party/barbecue.  I’m sure I’ll attend at least a dozen of those over the hot months of June, July, and August, and you will too.  So take a hint from me and invest in kitten heels that will keep you feeling sexy while your dripping from head to toe.  I absolutely love these fuschia sandals from by Manolo Blahnik (available at Neiman Marcus).  Yes, $695.00 is a lot, but a girl can dream and in the meantime use them as fashion inspiration.  Don’t forget that you’ll need a fun cover up too.  I’d take this adorable String Crochet Bell Sleeve dress from Betsey Johnson and with a swimsuit that’s simply sweet or devilishly bright this look will be sure to make a splash!

4.  Every Bride is the Queen, But You Can Still Be the Fashionista

Summer = Wedding Season.  And whether you love seeing the bride walk down the aisle or you’re only in it for the free bubbly at the reception, you’ll still want to look good enough to take home the best man.  I’m really into gladiator sandals and all their wonderful variations, so why not try them at a wedding.  Luichiny Ankle-wrap Sandals for $89.00 at Victoria Secret in bronze are a fun twist to this trend.  Pair them with this gorgeous Cotton Sateen Gateau Skirt from J. Crew (on sale for $69.50) in Champagne and this Rosette Scoop Neck Blouse in Carmiro Pink from Ann Taylor Loft for $34.50 (pictured).  With a this fresh outfit you’re sure to be the envy of every girl there even if you don’t catch the bouquet.

5.  Hot Summer Night

One of my favorite things about summer is romantic dates that can get just as heated as the night.  Keep your look simple and classy in a black dress like the Fan Bodice Silk Strapless Dress from Bebe then add personality with a funky pair of heels like ‘All In’ from Chinese Laundry (pictured), ‘Raven’ from Jimmy Choo, or ‘Pleasure’ from Carlos. Straighten your hair and wear down or pull back in a low ponytail, but remember to keep it sleek with minimal jewelry, as your shoes will say it all, and hopefully score you a good night kiss.  XOXO
