The Proposal

I don’t usually write movie reviews, but I just can’t help myself after falling in love with my newest favorite romantic comedy this weekend.  See, I consider myself somewhat of a romantic movie snob/expert.  I’m what you might call a typical girl, whose taste for movies centers on the optimistic, dreamy, and overall wonderful.

I’ve watched the classics like “Casablanca“, the 80’s teen dreams like “Pretty in Pink“, and the movies of now like “He’s Just Not That Into You.”  My movie collection is dominated by the light-hearted, light-headed lovesick butterflies in your stomach feeling.  Some of my favorites include “One Fine Day“, “Sabrina,” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

I almost forgot: “Love Actually,” “The Notebook“, and “Before Sunrise“-whoa, stop me now, people, or I’ll keep on until you do know my entire movie collection.  Now, you may understand why I consider myself an expert.  I don’t like, in fact I cringe, when my much beloved movie genre is made too cheesy.  Stop rolling your eyes, all you non-romantics.  There is a difference and very thin line between sweetness and cheesiness and humor and ridiculous theatrics.

For example, “Made of Honor” with Patrick Dempsey equaled too many outrageous scenarios for an hour and a half and “Bride Wars” equaled too many ‘only in cinema’ coincidences to make it fall flat.  Don’t worry though, as I said, I’m in love with “The Proposal” (Ryan Reynolds had no effect on this in any way, ha).

Sure, it’s predictable.  From the movie trailer you know that Andrew, Ryan Reynolds, is going to have to marry his boss, Margaret, played by Sandra Bullock, all so she can stay in the country, and they can both keep their jobs.  It’s not a puzzle or a brainteaser.

It’s simple.  But that’s why you should love it.  Being a romantic comedy and not a romantic drama, the movie’s big finish, as everyone can assume, will be happy.  As a movie-goer, you can sit back in your seat and enjoy the ride and the chemistry.

That’s right; Reynolds and Bullock have amazing chemistry.  I wanted to see them fight.  I wanted to see them kiss.  I wanted to see them fall in love.  And that’s exactly what I got.

Even though, pessimists might say this story line is absurd, they’re wrong because they’re pessimists.  The world is a crazy place: bosses fall for assistants, people fly to Alaska, and love can be there when you least expect it.  So, enjoy the steps it takes for Andrew and Margaret to find each other.  “The Proposal” isn’t too cheesy.  It made my list, and I hope it makes yours.  Grab your girlfriends, moms, boyfriends laugh, fall in love, and remember to pay extra special attention when Ryan Reynolds runs across the screen naked…yum. XOXO

I’m not really a romantic comedy person…whatsoever. But I agree, this movie is great fun. The dog and the eagle especially. Reynolds and Bullock were excellent.
