This Weekend Rocks: October 1-4 (oh boy, does it ever)

This weekend has been on my calendar for months, as it’s the one in which I trek down to Austin, TX, for my first ever pilgrimage to Austin City Limits. But the Norman/OKC area gets some love because of ACL, leaving those of you here in Norman (instead of in Zilker Park) with a fantastic slate of music this weekend.

Should Do: Hittin ya with two concerts this week. Friday, Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers & Ali Harter will be playing 51st Street Speakeasy in Oklahoma City. These two ladies with local roots play fantastic folk, and your ears will thank you for hitting this show.

Then, the next day, you can drive back to the city and see Kings of Leon with White Lies at the Ford Center. I know you know all the words to “Use Somebody”; I mean, if you’ve been to an OU football pre-game this year you’ve heard it 40,000 times. The fact that “Manhattan” and “Sex on Fire” also will be played at the show should compel you to go. Yes. Do it.

Could Do:If you’re into hardcore, Poison the Well is gonna be at the Conservatory on Thursday. If you’re a hardcore kid, you should have heard of them already and need no convincing. If you haven’t heard of them, I’m not sure you’re a hardcore kid.

Also, Clutch will be playing Diamond Ballroom on Saturday. They play straight-up rock and roll, and they do it with gusto. If you need to headbang, but don’t want to get hardcore kicked, you could end up here and be satisfied.

Shouldn’t Do: If you stay at home, you will miss one of the best weekends of music of the year. I didn’t even get to mention The Walkmen FOR FREE at Meacham, The Get Up Kids, The Almost, John Legend, and two other Ali Harter shows (she keeps busy). So you shouldn’t stay at home.
