The University of Oklahoma is a big name school with a small college feel, and being a part of the Honors College is great way to make it even smaller! If you’re looking for a private school atmosphere and an intense learning environment, then Honors College is for you. Our Honors College offers classes that are limited to 22 students, but generally average 13 to 14 students. These small classes are taught by the best professors on campus. President Boren even teaches an American Federal Government course once a year!

Enrolling in the Honors College is the only way to graduate with honors from OU. If you maintain a 3.4 grade point average or higher, then your diploma will have those nice Latin letter distinctions i.e. Magna, Suma or Cum Laude. Admitted students may apply to the Honors College at any time. Entering freshmen students must have a 30 ACT or 1330 SAT with a 3.75 grade point, and current OU students may apply with a 15 credit hours and a 3.4 grade point average. Once admitted, students must take 6 classes that are Honors sections throughout their undergraduate career. That is not even a class a semester! The great thing is these classes are not in addition to your major course work, but you may take those classes in an Honors Section. There are a wide variety of Honors courses offered including Food and Culture or American Superheroes.

In addition to the small class size and esteemed faculty, the Honors College offers reading groups. These groups of 10 – 15 students meet once a week to during a semester to discuss a predetermined book. The reading groups are free, and you receive a free book! What a great way to interact with students from all academic backgrounds and with many different interests. Some of the books selected in the past are: Hamlet’s Blackberry, The Color Purple, A Thousand Splendid Suns and Infinite Jest. Remember these groups are fun, free and have no tests or quizzes!

If you are a student who enjoys an intimate learning environment with students and faculty that will challenge you, then OU’s Honors College is for you. Find out more about all the Honors College offers at http://www.ou.edu/honors/.
