Sooner Connection is one of the ways that OU Recruitment Services helps to keep prospective students and future Sooners up-to-date about deadlines, OU campus events,  recruitment events and when your OU Representative visits your region for college fairs or school visits. It is a place where you will find information regarding your academic interests, scholarships, financial aid and important dates. You will also meet your OU representative. It is also a great resource for topics like scholarship essay writing tips, how to get involved on the OU campus and informs prospective students of campus-specific information based on an interest profile that is filled out when the Sooner Connection account is created.

The University of Oklahoma is a special place to me. I found my passion and purpose for my career, my home away from home, my lifelong friends  and confidantes and my significant other. The university is a special place because each of us has our own story — our own personal connection to the reason we are here and the reason we are studying and involved in the things we are.

Just yesterday I was talking to a tour guide who was explaining an exciting situation that she encountered on the walking tour of a student’s campus visits. She said that there was a student who was raised from childhood supporting another rival school, and the prospective student asked our tour guide, who is from the same hometown, why she chose OU. Our tour guide stated, “This is the place where I clicked, I felt immediately at home and four years later I know I made the best choice.” The tour guide will be graduating this May, and moving onto bigger achievements in her life. This tour guide has been an incredible campus leader, dedicated student and a humble leader with a passion to mentor and encourage younger students. Our students are a testament to what makes the University of Oklahoma a special place.

The opportunity to discuss my OU experience and studies with prospective students and families can sometimes become emotionally stirring. You may wonder, “Wow, is it really like that?”  Yes, you see the next four years of your life are some of the most important of your life — but why? The “college years” are the years during which you will not only grow in knowledge, but in your personality, coping skills, troubleshooting skills and everything that you have known about yourself until that day. You will find the classroom subjects that make you “tick.” You will face conflict and learn how to diplomatically resolve conflict. You will face some issues that you may never have experienced throughout your high school years in the protection of your home and the K-12 education system, and you will learn how to search out a mentor to guide you through these years in your life. You will experience some sort of ice or snow storm during a finals week or beginning of the semester, and you will learn how to troubleshoot if your computer decides to crash in that time — it will happen without fail…or at least something of the magnitude will! Your ideas and thoughts will be challenged, because those challenging you want to prepare you for the world outside the OU bubble. You will be stretched, encouraged, pruned and loved because we are the Sooner family. We would not be the university that we are without the faculty, staff and students that contribute to the qualities of excellence that make the University of Oklahoma special. When David Ross Boyd, our first university president, said “What possibilities,” he had a vision of the great university where our students are guaranteed a competitive and high-caliber education in a family environment!
