1) My favorite part of the week? Wednesday night. Why? $3 burgers at McNellie’s. I have an evening Vis Comm class, Design Technology, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our class lets out around 7:30, and directly from class we all pile into a few peoples’ cars and drive to McNellie’s Pub in Norman. It’s just a quick 5-minute trip, and maybe an hour wait (for our large groups of 10 or more), and then we can eat delicious burgers and fries–for just $3. It’s every college student’s dream. I will admit that I was a little wary about such cheap hamburgers, but I’m very picky, and I love them. You can also sub in sweet potato fries if you’d like, which is a very popular option. McNellie’s is located in downtown Norman, which is home to a lot of very fun and unique places. I definitely recommend walking around if you get the chance.

I’ve been thoroughly amazed with all of the awesome experiences I’ve been able to have during my first two months at OU! I’ve already mentioned some of them in previous posts of mine, and I probably need to think of more things to talk about because this seems to be the only theme of my posts, but I think that only having these cool things to talk about is what makes OU so great, because these opportunities are present for me and all other students almost every day, and if not that at least every week! I’m currently in the air flying home from Orlando, FL, where I spent the weekend. Why was I in Orlando instead of in Norman enjoying all the homecoming festivities? Well, as first vice president of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, I had the opportunity to attend ALD’s national conference. For free.

At the conference, I was surprised to find that OU was famous in the ALD world. We won several awards, and our faculty advisor, Dr. Alice Lanning, was named outstanding advisor of the year. I’m constantly surprised to discover just how respected the University of Oklahoma is.

If you want to attend a university that you can be proud of in every facet, choose to be a Sooner. We truly have it all.

I have found in college that I have let myself go–I realize this is something that just normally happens to women after they are older and have had kids and no longer have time for themselves.  Yet for me this is my life now.  I am over-involved, I work, and I am taking 18 hours. Needless to say that my extra curricular activities are my life.  There are days where you will not shower just to save 30 minutes in the morning.  I find myself lying in bed when my alarm goes off debating how bad my hair would look, and let’s be honest, I usually decide that showering can wait.

I have written “BLOG” on my to-do list every week since the start of my sophomore year, and this is my first post. That should be an indication of how my year is going thus far. Let me quickly catch you up on what’s been going on in my life…

I had way too much fun over summer, but still managed to land an internship with the product development department of my dad’s company. I continue to put in as many hours as possible while at school for a little extra income. More importantly, I’m making great connections that will surely help me in the future.

Sadly, I am just getting started with this whole blogging process, but they always say “better late than never,” don’t they? Anyway, my name is Christine, but I am more commonly know as Chrissy! I am a freshman and a Public Relations major (hopefully that doesn’t change), currently enrolled in 14 hours.

College, thus far, has been nothing short of adventurous. There is ALWAYS something going on on campus so you are definitely never left bored. Unless you’re into that sort of thing, I guess. My days recently have be overtaken by homework, pomping for homecoming with my lovely AOII sisters (yes, I went GREEK), U-Sing practice, philanthropy events, date parties, movie nights in the Union, laundry, hanging out with my fabulous best friends/ roommate(s), going to football games, and trying to find time to sleep. Although trying to work everything into my schedule is challenging, it has all already paid off. You surprisingly learn a lot about yourself while you’re trying to find time to do all these random things.

I promise to follow up on most of these things in upcoming posts, but for tonight, my plans include: relaxing with a Dr. Pepper, eating some cupcakes, and making a tower out of my textbooks. These are the glorious rewards of doing your homework early in the evening! 🙂

Peace, Love, and BOOMER SOONER!

Is the famous line “it’s all Greek to me” ringing true for you? Well ladies, if you’re considering going Greek while you’re at OU, here are some quick tips to make the rush process not so stressful!

First of all, I’d like to let you know that although Greek life is very dominant at OU, there are sooooo many other things to get involved with on campus! Trust me. Coming into freshman year, I decided not to go through formal recruitment because I had absolutely no idea what sororities were all about! No one in my family “went Greek” and a few people I knew already at OU hadn’t gone through rush and they were loving college life so why dive straight into something I know absolutely nothing about?! And to be honest, freshman year was a B-L-A-S-T!! I got involved in President’s Community Scholars, Baptist Student Union, Recruitment Services, CAC and so on and so on! But after meeting a ton of friends who were in sororities and seeing what Greek life was all about, I decided to go through rush this past August as a sophomore and I don’t regret it one bit! I must say it was nice seeing my friends on the other side of the front door in some of the houses I visited during rush, because it is semi-overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect. But let’s get start from the beginning…

WE WON!

This past weekend 21 of my friends and I carpooled to Dallas to enjoy a fun filled weekend for the Red River Rivalry.  All of us went to the game together and had a blast.  I got the pleasure of eating my very first corn dog and let me say that we now have a relationship that will continue at every fair for the rest of my life!  OU/TX weekend is one of my favorite weekends in the whole year.  I get the best of everything–I get football, fall weather, fair rides, smack talk with Texas fans, the West End, sharing a hotel room with 7 people, and above all fried food!  I loved nothing more than walking around the fair eating my fried cookie dough, that cost me 12 tickets, yelling “Boomer Sooner Y’all” to every Texas fan that I saw; life just doesn’t get much better than that.

When I got back to Norman on Sunday the weather was perfect-70 and sunny!  This made me want to spend the whole day outside, so my friend Lauren and I went to TG Farm where they have a pumpkin patch and we picked out “Lionel” and “Peter”, our two huge pumpkins! We then brought them back to Gamma Phi Beta, where I live, and borrowed knives and spoons to carve them.  I modeled Peter after Jack in The Nightmare Before Christmas movie and Lauren just made a cool face and then added a special touch to the back of her pumpkin–an upside down longhorn!

The fun didn’t stop there though, we then went to Lauren’s house and roasted the pumpkin seeds.  The day after OU/TX weekend should be a day of rest, but it was entirely too beautiful outside to let the day go to waste.

The Great Maze

So I was driving out toward Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma this morning and the exit I normally take was blocked off for road construction with a sign that said (in bright orange might I add) CLOSED. Not, exit closed one mile ahead, please detour… simply CLOSED. I was road blocked on the way to Sand Springs.

“Are you kidding me?  We have 55 friends in common!  How do I not know this person?”

Maybe I should start from the beginning.  I work in accounting consulting for Deloitte in New York City, and we started a project for Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina.  A plus to the new project – strong Big XII representation on the project. On our team of ten or so, we have someone from Texas A&M, someone from University of Nebraska, and myself from University of Oklahoma.
