It’s Homecoming week! You always know you’re in the deep throes of fall when the mums on campus are absolutely SPECTACULAR and the South Oval is decorated with Homecoming stuff!

Homecoming week is jam-packed from start to finish, and it feels like everyone on campus is involved in some way or another! From making boards to decorating the South Oval, from some of the most intricate chalk drawings you’ll ever see to the banners hanging from the Union parking garage, the whole campus gets ready for the football game on Saturday! Thursday was the banner competition, so I included a couple of pictures of the competition! The banners usually hang from the Union garage, but it was raining Thursday so the competition was judged inside the Union.

There’s so much to Homecoming that most students don’t see. Homecoming takes a huge team of people to coordinate all of the activities, judge the events, and make sure everything runs smoothly. From meetings beforehand to discuss events with group Homecoming Directors, from finding sponsors to provide food on the South Oval (yum!) to coordinating events the day of, this group of students works tirelessly for over 6 months to plan Homecoming. And this year, I have to say they’ve done a fantastic job!

One of the really cool things about this year is that the Homecoming Exec worked with the Athletic Department and Nike to produce a Nike Homecoming Shirt. They say “There’s only one Oklahoma” and they have a picture of a football player raising his helmet on the back. It’s really cool that this happened here this year – Nike only picks a few schools a year to make this kind of shirt for! And everyone’s wearing theirs to the game this year, so the student section’s going to be completely decked out in crimson!

For me, events like Homecoming remind me of why coming to OU was probably the best decision I’ve ever made (definitely up in the top 5 best decisions). I thought I wanted to go to a small liberal arts school (think 2500 students) with no football. But then, I looked again at OU and realized I could get a liberal arts education here, and, let’s be honest, football is tons of fun. It’s so cool to get to watch the University community coalesce around a common bond and have everyone spend the week before the game celebrating our team! The energy on campus during football season is hard to describe. It’s like the air is charged with excitement to see how the team’s going to do. I would definitely recommend coming for a visit during the fall so you can see for yourself!

A MacArthur Genius grant, a New York Times Best Book of the Year, Caméra d’Or at Cannes, and a New York Magazine Best Book of the Year—these are just some of the accolades that have been accumulated by the nine authors who came to OU for the three-day Neustadt Conference. As a student in the Neustadt class, I spent hours talking with them, and actually got to know them, not only as great artists, but also as interesting and fun people.

As homecoming week approaches, I am reminded of my freshman year.  My first college homecoming experience was certainly a memorable one, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

Anyone’s first year as a university student is going to be an adjustment, whether you attended a prestigious college prep school or a small public school.  My initial foray into university life was no different, and the homecoming week of my freshman year was by far the most challenging of my young college career at the time.  Looking back now, however, I see that this was definitely a formative growing experience.

On my way to the Union, I ran into Fall. Our campus has been sun kissed with florals that radiate a cozy fall feeling. It’s an absolutely beautiful vision, and happens to be my favorite season!

Fall on our campus

Fall on our campus.

I need, I need to sleep. It’s one o’clock in the morning and twenty four hours after I had bustled back into my cosy little dorm room, my mind is still on U2.

I did not go to OU/Texas.
In fact, I did not watch a single minute of the game. Why? I was a bridesmaid for my friend’s wedding.. thus, I was busy, busy, busy from 9 – 5. My sadness of missing the game was trumped by the amazingness that is Bono and Fergie Ferg the following Sunday. Here are some shots I got with my 6 pixel camera.

I have about 100 more photos, but I will spare you.

I feel very lucky, and I’m sure everyone else that was able to go felt the same way.

Hello, everyone!

I hope all of you are enjoying this true atmosphere of fall! As most of you probably know, the OU/Texas game was upon us. Unfortunately, I was not able to make the trip to Dallas. Instead, I returned to Oklahoma City for a very much needed three day weekend.

Now, I’m sure a lot of you are wondering about my title for this blog (catchy, is it not?). Well, the derivation of this title has to do a lot with my past week at school. I had taken my Organic Chemistry exam last Friday on October 9th and gotten my results back on that next Monday. I was absolutely devastated to find that I had gotten an 84 on this second exam.

So did ya’ll know there is a sphinx in California?

I’m reading this article about how history is subjective and re-tells itself and about how we live in a society where people view themselves as being a part of history. It’s fascinating.

But anyway, I’m reading along, plugging through dense sentences with words like “confabulate” and “multifarious,” and this entertaining story pops up in the article:

As I walk to the building’s entrance unsure what I will find on the other side of the glass door, I take a big breath and prepare my stomach for the worst. The last time I was here was during summer camp and I am pretty sure I starved myself. But something has changed. Oh yes, something has seriously changed.
