Balancing Acts: Family v. Work v. Workout

Years ago, I had a hard time understanding how people didn’t schedule their workouts.  It seems like “family” was a common excuse I heard.  In looking back, I was an exercise snot.  After all, you just make time and take time, right?

And then, BOOM!  The family grows and kids and lives intertwine.  Now, I find myself planning physical family activities.  Life changes and we must be creative in how we respond.  My family is my priority and that doesn’t mean I’m going to go without workouts.  These are just a few ways I’ve found to fit it all in.

  • A baby is a great weight for squats!  Hold that baby tightly or use a harness and squat.  The movement is great for all!
  • Race your child in the pool or on land.  You can’t beat the quality time together.
  • Go for a family hike.
  • Invest in memberships to places where you will get exercise like the Crystal Bridge in OKC.  It’s educational and there’s a great park for kids.
  • Sneak in lunges while you’re getting gas, waiting for the kid’s game to commence, or brushing your teeth.  Time is time, people!
  • With a child in a swing, push the kid, squat, hop, and start again.

Finding time now is simply a matter of finding the fun.  May you find your family fun this summer!
