I know I already blogged this week, but like I said… it is finals time and I don’t have Facebook, so I need something to do with my time!

I want to take this time to talk about my mixed emotions with the semester coming to an end.

1. Fall semester of junior year coming to an end means that people are leaving.

2. I love spending time with my family, but I miss my friends over the holiday break!

3. Moving out of the house.

My junior year thus far has been absolutely wonderful.  I have gotten to do so many neat things through the university and have accomplished so many of my personal goals.  Before I say what I am planning on saying, let me say this first — I NEVER cry.  With that being said, I found myself crying while studying at the National Weather Center, not because I wasn’t going to be able to get that one A, but because spring semester is going to bring on some big challenges.

So right now it is the Sunday before finals week…I should be studying, and well, I have been, I swear, but I needed a break!  This past Monday, I had the opportunity to go to a holiday party at President Boren’s home!  We had a lovely holiday dinner and then caroled with the Papa B; he even sang with us so it was quite fun!  This holiday party got me in the mood for break and the Christmas season!

Last week was dead week. Dead week is a week where teachers are not supposed to assign new material or have anything due that is worth a certain percentage of your grade so that you can prepare for finals week. I usually go to the library to study, but this year for finals I have been studying at the National Weather Center — it is amazing! In all actuality, I have tried to not tell many people about my love for the Weather Center so that it does not become more populated.  I have spent at least 6 hours here every day since dead week began! I have a new love for the soloist piano station on Pandora; in fact is the only thing that is holding me together this finals week! I have also spent a ton of time testing different grade scenarios.  I have checked each class to see what I have to do in order to keep my A, or to see how bad I could do to keep a B.  I have also done the math on how my grades this semester will affect my overall GPA.  This is something that I have become a pro at while at OU.

I wanted to let you all know that while dead week and finals are not my favorite things, they are indeed fun!  I have gotten to have so much bonding time with my friends.  I also learned how to rap the lyrics to a song (I can’t really rap them, but it made everyone laugh)!  I have eaten fast food at least once, if not more, a day.  7/11 is my favorite gas station because they now know my name and what I like.  The Weather Center security guards no longer check my ID and they even feel comfortable enough to ask me to bring them back food!  The not fun things that happen this week are the annoying people who see that you are intently studying and still decide that it would be okay if they “catch up” with their friends.  Also, cumulative finals are NEVER fun!

Well, I just wanted to remind all of you prospective students that if you guys ever have any questions to please ask them! I remember not knowing where to go to college during Christmas time of my senior year, but that is a great time to sit down and go over the pros and cons to each school that you are thinking about attending!  If anyone needs some pros for OU let me know because I could list about 92,578,493,752,894,629,034 million!

I am going to get back to studying!

Ah my. Dead week is over. Finals week is but a few days away. After finals week, my first semester as a sophomore is officially over. So what to say about this semester? It’s been pretty great. I’ve learned so much in my classes, and who could ask for more than that, really? My Microbiology class has certainly been stressful at times, but I can honestly say that I’ve learned the basics of MBIO and am now ready to take it to the next level! Very excited. As for my Love/Sex/Race class, that’s been so much fun as well. I’ve written two papers that I’m very proud of. That class has really honed my paper writing skills. My Death/Grief/Growth class has given me some time to ruminate and ponder the topic of death and dying. Great class. I recommend it to everyone. I’ve done one creative project and one research paper for that class and it’s really given me the opportunity to not only learn more about death and grief, but more about myself also. Guitar class has been pretty nifty. I’ve learned about chords, how to read tabs and how to play some AWESOME songs. My Gateway class, where I was the T.A., was a success. Everyone bonded and we made some great memories. I’ve enjoyed my semester. I’ve learned so much and have met great people.

And now it’s all coming to an end. . .FINALS TIME. Eek. Very nervous, but then again, not very nervous. I took my MBIO lab finals this past week. INTENSE exam, but I think I did alright. Next week, I have three exams and a 15 page research paper due. How do I feel so far? I’m managing pretty well, I think. I went to a MBIO review session this morning and was surprised to find myself understanding everything my professor was saying. That’s GOT to be a good sign, right? This is one really great thing about OU. The professors really prepare you for exams. Whether that be by holding review sessions or by posting up study guides or just by letting you know that they are always available by email or office hours to help you out. You are really not alone at all during finals week. No matter the stress, it’s always comforting to know that your professors are always there in case you have a last minute question or if you want something explained to you again. Also, they’re so encouraging! My Microbiology professor has really calmed me down about my upcoming exam, because believe me, I was OUT OF IT with anxiety. But I went to visit his office hours and he assured me that everything was more or less straightforward and that my studying habits will serve me well. Awesome. Nothing like words of encouragement to help you out in these times of stress and worry.

But I know that finals week will be over very soon. My first exam is on Tuesday, and this weekend is just going to FLY by. Then my final exam is on Wednesday, and after that, I will be free for a whole entire month to do what I please. What do I plan on doing? READING, READING, READING. I’ve missed my novels too much. Can’t wait. Although now that I think of it, I will kind of miss everything from this semester. I feel just a tiny bit sad…but hey, I’ll be back next semester with new classes and new things to learn. My excitement wins over!

All in all, I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed this semester. I was extremely busy, running all over the place. I hardly had time to do anything but go to classes and study hard for the next exam, but it’s been such an awesome and whirlwind experience, I just can’t complain!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE STUDENTS OUT THERE! And I hope everyone has a great holiday season.

Boomer Sooner!

Hi there! It’s been a long while since my last blog, time for a serious update! Life has been crazy lately! I cannot believe that it’s already December and finals are almost here! Between classes, school work, and life, you rarely have a break for some “me time.” When you get those moments, take them! They are few and far between.

Other than classes, I’ve been keeping busy with various activities. I’m on Winter Welcome Week exec this fall, and we are so busy planning events for the first week back from winter break, but it’s one of my favorite activities! We meet every Monday and have a good time planning WWW 2011! It’s so much fun, we all joke around with each other, but some how we get the job done. I’m definitely ready (even though Christy French, WWW Chair, may not be…) for the first week back from break to be here to see all of our hard work pay off! It’s going to be awesome. Then again, I’m ready for a nice and long break, so Winter Welcome Week, you don’t have to be here just yet!

Regular season football is over, and now it’s time for some post-season fun! This past weekend was the last Big XII Championship ever, and we beat Nebraska, one of OU’s biggest rivals and the team responsible for disbanding the Big XII Conference. I was there, cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners in my crimson and cream, and it was one of my favorite games of season! My other favorite game was the one at Mizzou, even though we lost. My best friend and I made the trip all the way to Columbia, Missouri, for College Game Day and the game, and even though we didn’t come back with a win, the trip was definitely worth it! Katy and I met Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit, and if you know me, you know I could NOT pass up a photo op with Corso and Herbie! (Now all I need is one with the ESPN love of my life, Scott Van Pelt! Someday, someday.)

Right now it’s 11:21 pm. I should be sitting and working on an essay due Thursday for an Honors College Perspectives Class I’m taking called The American Landscape, but it’s so much easier to procrastinate by listening to music, checking Facebook,  and writing another blog post for this site.  Today students who’d bought season tickets this year were given the opportunity to order tickets to the Big XII Championship game in Arlington, TX.  I bought them and will have my ticket grouped with some of my friends, so I’m really glad that OU beat OSU so that we get to go! This week seems to be a very busy week for me and everyone I talk to. People are happy to have gone home for Thanksgiving break, myself included despite living only 30 or so minutes away! I have not gone home more than two times this semester for a long stay and a few days at home with family and friends was great.  Many people, myself included, are extremely glad to go home because it means having a room to themselves! After observing roommates living together for a few months with either people who at first were complete strangers or  close friends, I’ve heard many stories and even have some of my own.  Roommate woes, while annoying and stressful, provide some of the best and funniest things to talk about when discussing your freshman year of college.

Of course, many people have had excellent roommate experiences and I hope that when you come to OU, you do too! But here are a few funny anecdotes.

Hello Everyone!

Well, Thanksgiving break is (unfortunately) over and it is time for the longest, tiring, most stressful time of the year during the most wonderful time of the year! Why must Christmastime and finals have to collide?!

My Charlie Brown Christmas tree is set up in my room, though, with a star on top that absolutely dominates. It’s really awesome. But anyway, finals are approaching around the corner and even though I’m excited for the semester to be over, I have to be honest– it’s pretty bittersweet. I know, I know, I’m only a sophomore but STILL! College is going so fast and I need it to slow down because I’m certainly not ready to be one semester closer of being done! You’re probably thinking how high school flew by, well college is like the fast forward button on the 16x faster option! Despite the cheesy-ness of that example, it’s true.

1) Move In. There is nothing in the world like being a part of the joy and excitement that blankets campus on this August day. The entire Walker Adams mall is covered with tents, new Sooners, and parents. Music booms across campus from a DJ. Businesses set up tables and give away free frisbees, pens, laundry bags, cash, etc. Free donuts, bagels and juices are provided in the morning, and a free barbecue is held in the evening. This year, I even got my caricature done, you guessed it, for FREE! I always work with Housing & Food’s marketing team doing anything and everything–passing out water bottles to parents and students, running the elevators, and even checking on on the caricaturist and bringing him food. You’ll soon see that this day is well worth the early wake up call. Nothing compares to seeing the excitement on all the new Sooners’ faces! Read more
